Sheep outnumber people in the rolling peaceful Hills of Devon left. >4. 31 a ?~"5 rv6 r Zno a by Dave Lioio staff photographer few regions in Britain can offer such diversity of landscape and cultural heritage As Devon and Cornwall England s Southwest Peninsular counties. Nearly 500 Miles of combined rugged coastline interrupted by occasional Sand or Pebble beaches encompasses the full spectrum of Scenic Beauty. Frequently the two Are lumped together under the description Quot the West country Quot As though it were one homogeneous Region. Yet Devon with its vast virtually uninhabited dartmoor National Parl and Cornwall with picture postcard coves and fishing villages Are As different As night and Day culturally As Well As topographically. Where Devon has developed its Light Industry and Commerce Over the decades Cornwall has maintained its Rural origins. The difference can be seen by the contrasting sizes of their towns and cities. Devon s Plymouth approaches a Quarter million in population. Cornwall s largest City Falmouth hovers around a Mere 20,000. The inhabitants of these two adjoining counties could not have sprung from More different roots. Although both areas were originally populated by celts Cornwall was Able to resist the subsequent invasions by romans saxons normans and other Continental raiders who considered Cornwall a Quot the land beyond the land Quot a too far West to be a threat. The River Tamar which separates the two counties became a natural Barrier against the dilution of celtic blood. Devon in contrast saw its history shaped by the a infusion of invaders from Many lands. Their appetite for Trade and Commerce built Plymouth into a major port which spurred the growth of wealth and importance for the Region. Cornwall s Prosperity did t come until much later when the Industrial revolution of the 19th Century made tin and Copper mining a profitable Industry. Its Prosperity was Short lived however when the Industry collapsed toward the end of the Century. The mass emigration of miners left fishing and farming As the Only significant industries of Cornwall. Later even the fishing Industry waned. Today Cornwall depends greatly upon tourism to bolster its financial Well being. The landscape is densely populated with bed and breakfast farmhouses and the local population is totally outnumbered in the summer by the hordes of Sun seekers who flock to its beaches particularly along the Quot British Riviera Quot which stretches along Cornwall s Southeast coastline. Devon and Cornwall Are both Quot outdoor recreation Quot counties with 70 percent of their visitors arriving in the four month period from june through september to enjoy hiking camping horseback Riding surfing and swimming making Spring and fall the Best times to avoid the crowds and Garner better prices at hotels and pensions. But whatever the season England s wholesome ruggedly Beautiful West country tugs at the \ adventuresome spirit of All who traverse it. The danger lies so residents say in not wanting Ever to leave.
