Two premiere holy Days in the jewish religion. A time of Celebration a time for reflect lion and a time when most jews world wide Exchange messages of Joy and remembrance through greeting cards. But tradition has become a Little More difficult for the jewish soldiers and their families stationed in Europe to uphold this year. Why so one might ask because the buyer and management of those wonderful folks at our army and air Force Exchange service and their one source card Vendor made a conscious deliberate decision not to ship any jewish new year cards to Europe. That s an unconscionable act by an organization whose management is supposedly pledged to fulfil customer needs. Its an action that Borders on blatant religious discrimination and needs to be rebuked at the highest Levels. And while this decision is certainly inexcusable cafes docs have a defensive Fallback position for its decision. It seems that those obnoxiously loud talking often mechanically inoperative a create a card machines in some of the larger exchanges have the ability to a generate an appropriate card at $2.80 a copy. A a v a a a a a a unfortunately not one cafes store manager or sales associate knew this fact when inquiries were made at various exchanges throughout Europe. But As this is a season of forgiveness i must in All fairness note that most of the larger stores do carry an assortment of general purpose cards appropriate for the jewish customer. And i also appreciate the responsiveness of cafes managers and Public relations personnel in Heidelberg to my written and in person complaint. However done to look for me in an cafes card Section come hanukkah time. Ill buy mine at the hallmark store the next time i go try to the states. New years cards for my Christian friends too just in Case that a the next forgotten Holiday. . Phillip w. Miller Heidelberg Germany invest in Guantanamo i am writing because of the problem i am having lately every time i turn on my television and watch cuban refugees Drifting in the rough water because they want the same Freedom As we have in this great country of ours. Although our government is doing its Best to accommodate these people i believe we can do much More to assist and alleviate the hardships these poor people Are going through in Guantanamo. What i have in mind is to open up Guantanamo As a business investment and tourist Center. It will create jobs for cuban and haitian refugees. The Bottom line is lets create a Little Havana in Guantanamo a american made of course. John Byohel Firth Germany after researching possible child care for my family i have determined that the Vogel Weh child development Center would be the Best Choice. But because my husband and i Are both Active army we cannot use this facility because it does not open until 6 30 /. Most army units including ours have physical training monday wednesday and Friday starting at 6 30 or sooner. Thursdays we have unit formations no later than 6 45. To report to work on time we need to drop the children off by 6 . I called the Vogel Weh child development Center arid was told it is an air Force run facility which caters to air Force personnel. Since Vogel Weh is a joint army and air Force Community i fail to understand Why army needs Are riot taken into consideration. It is obvious that the Community is primarily army. The Vogel Weh cd should be catering to the entire Community and especially the army families. I have talked to numerous soldiers with children in my unit and asked them Why they do not use the Vogel Weh cd. Each told me they done to use the facilities because the hours Are inadequate. A few actually do use the Center but Are paying for alternate care for a few hours in the morning or Are leaving their smaller children Home with an older sibling on it Days. On thursdays they drop their children off and race with the wind to make it to formation by 6 45, often reporting late. This is crazy. Why can to Vogel Weh child development Center open a half hour earlier and provide adequate service to the entire Community not just the air Force sgt. Sarah Kaiserslautern Germany a commentary mandatory sentences Are missing Mark by Scripps Howard news service reacting against crimes committed by offenders on probation or parole state Legislatures across the country have enacted mandatory minimum sentences. Yet citizens still besieged by unprecedented youth violence and a Long running drug War continue to demand stiffer sentences. Two recent cases a one from Arkansas one from Michigan a illustrate Why Ever stiffer mandatory minimum sentences Are a false solution. When surgeon general Joycelyn elders son was sentenced to 10 years in prison last month Many parents must have Felt a Pang of sympathy. For a first offence a Selling one eighth of an ounce of cocaine to an undercover agent a the Young Man was ordered to pay with a decade of his life. Or so it seemed. It turns out however that even under a mandatory sentence Kevin elders will be eligible for parole in two and a half years if admitted to a Kansas a Boot Camp program he will serve 105 Days then go on probation. For while Legislatures have appeased the Public demand for stiffer sentences by prescribing mandatory mini mums they have not necessarily tightened Access to parole. In Many states a a mandatory sentences Are just As meaningless As those imposed the old fashioned Way. One state that has combined draconian mandatory sentences with parole Reform however is Michigan. Its sentences Are so stiff that a Canadian judge has refused to extradite a fugitive named Daniel Jar Meson on human rights grounds. Charged with Selling 273 Grams 9.5 ounces of a cocaine containing substance to a police agent in 1986 a again a first offence a Jaimeson faces 20 years behind bars. The same crime in Canada would have brought a maximum sentence of five years. Michigan a Laws the judge said a offend the Canadian sense of what is fair right and and unlike Arkan Sas they mean what they say. Jaimeson would serve at least 16 years had he been arrested after 1988, he would have had to serve every last Day of the 20 years. / a a. A in this instance the most Basic objection to mandatory sentences moves to the fore when so awful a punishment is imposed Justice demands that it reflect a judgment about the unique Case at hand not application of a crude formula. Americans have clamoured for mandatory minimum sentences out of frustration. People Are tired of seeing violent and repeat offenders arrested for new crimes committed while they were on parole. The essential Reform is truth in sentencing. If sentences routinely meant what they said a if five years could be counted on to mean five years a citizens could Trust the system and judges could do their Job they could sentence All offenders even first time drug dealers according to the singular circumstances of their crimes.
