Bides time waiting for workplace Maria Berger has a problem with the family business. She does t like Beer can t stand to see women get drunk and wants to run a Hole someday. No problem unless your family happens to run Munich s famed Hof Breuhaus and you have been the manager of the Beer Hall off and on for about two years. It s easy to assume that anyone associated with the 405-year-old Beer Hall would probably like Beer Drunken people and the oomph of a German polka band. But to the 28-year-old Berger working at the Hof bauhaus is like working on daddy s farm it s a Job that will do until a better one comes along. My Sisters and Brothers All do different things Berger said. I m not so Berger has what some would say is an enviable Job. From her office a Maria Berger the three Story Beer Hall in downtown Munich she can hear the almost constant party going on in rooms around her. About 4,000 people each night go through the doors of the famous Saloon to Sample the Sweet Beer eat bratwurst and listen to authentic German polkas she said. The Hof Brau opened in 1589 when a local Duke tired of quaffing the Lousy local brew of the time decided to place one of the breweries under Royal patronage Berger said. In fact Hof Brau Means Royal since then the Haus has played Host to the famous and nefarious. In his Early Days Adolf Hitler made the Haus a routine Stop while trying to raise support for his nazi party. Vladimir Llynch Lenin also downed a few suds As he pondered the effectiveness of the communist state and Mikhail Gorbachev stopped by in 1992 to pay the renowned Beer Hall a visit. Berger said people visit the Haus for two reasons Beer and tourism. Regular customers she said have Long been a tradition at the Hof Brau. In the past Royalty and civil leaders were Given Royal treatment. Vestiges of those Days remain. Even today casual customers Aren t supposed to sit at a Stam Tisch a table reserved for regulars. Those tables Are usually marked with a sign hanging overhead. Regulars today Are people who either hold important positions in the Community or Are German versions of Norm Peterson from cheers. They Are distinguishable by their lederhosen and ornate Maas Beer steins. The Maas Are kept in special lockable Stein Racks around the lower floor of the Haus Berger said. Like a Beer Drinker s country club regulars come in unlock their steins and wait for a waiter or waitress to fill the 1 liter mugs with Hof Brau Beer. .,--.-. Tourists she said venture into the haul because someone suggested it or they read about it in a tour Book those tourists according to Berger come by the thousands every year. The Hall has gone through different management hands but the Hof Brau Brewer still owns the rights to the name Berger said. The two operations Are basically separate with the brewery supplying Beer to owner managers of the Beer Hall. Her family bought into the Hall in 1918. Since then someone in the Berger Home has managed the Haus. And someone always will Berger said As the polka band swung into Beer barrel polka. But Berger probably won t. She does t mind the Hob rus atmosphere calling it a Large party but she does t like seeing women and children drunk on Beer. It s truly horrible to see Berger said. Young people and women should t act like that.", for six years she has travelled the world trying to Complete her apprenticeship in hotel management. She works at the Hof Brau until the Day someone offers her a shot at her goal managing a hotel. This is a Good Job a very Good Job Berger shouted Over the Clatter of Beer drinkers toasting another polka. But i think something better will come Mark Kinkade september 22, 1994 stripes Magazine
