Turmoil at Turley As a Soldier in the United states army presently stationed on Turley Barracks in Mannheim Germany i would like to give my Point of View on what i Call the inva Sion of Turley Barracks. Ijas Well As others in my platoon was filled with indignation because of the attitude of a University of Maryland Stu Dent who wrote a letter to the editor sept.30. I can Only comment on the Issue concerning Turley Barracks soldiers negative reaction toward them. We As soldiers arc not responsible for welcoming University of Maryland Stu dents to the Community we Are not responsible for their mor ale or their Well being. That is the responsibility of the u of staff arid the students themselves. The soldiers on Turley Are multiple lived people. We Are responsible for Bur soldiering training and working Pur various Moss Many of us pursue civilian educational a we Are responsible for ourselves and family members. We As defenders of our country Are not tasked to make College students lives More pleasant while they attain their Aca Demic curriculum. If the writer feels that the soldiers have a negative attitude she could very Well be Correct in her Assumption. For the soldiers the University of Maryland brought More than just a Stu Dent body and staff. With the invasion came soldiers being uprooted from their billeting and made to share two arid three Man rooms formations warning against fraternization with students longer lines in the snack bar arid Post Exchange which affects Soldier s timeliness in getting Back to their duties extra grounds maintenance done by soldiers on detail to police Call after students and Many other additional duties that the sol Diers of Turley have had and will continue to have to endure. Therefore before an attitude is taken against the soldiers of Turley Barracks try putting the combat Boot on the other foot j. Taylor Mannheim Germany an not on time " " -. I m visiting United states army Europe on a try assignment. During my 10 years stationed Here during the 80s and Early 90s, i became accustomed1 to the mediocrity of american forces net work. My return to Europe shows that an has Only become i watched the news tonight it be came apparent that the can newscast being shown at 6 . Was at least four hours old. This As the eyes of the world Are once again focused on the persian Gulf and the american service members in that Region. The proof that the head line newscast was tape delayed became evident in the business report when the correspondent reported that the new York Stock Market had yet to open. This was at 6 20 ., get. You do the math. Why did t an broadcast a live head1 line news Why was t a disclaimer aired stating that the newscast was taped ear Lier or was an hoping its audience would t notice upon realizing their snafu i turned the Channel to can International Only to catch the closing moments of a live press conference by the chairman of the joint chiefs Gen. Shalikashvil. The Gen eral was of course talking about the on going tense situation Ort the Iraq Kuwait Border a situation that could ultimately affect the lives of thousands of Neucom service members and their families. Maybe someday soon Congress will consider the global availability of state Side television and weigh the Cost of it against perpetuating the myth that an with its dismal programming and com Mand information policies is filling the information needs of americans Over the facts of footballing response to the sports commentary bygone Wojciechowski of the los Angeles times in 1902 the University of Michigan played in and won the very first tournament of roses football game. Since then the wolverines have returned to Pasadena 15 More times. You get to play in the Rose bowl oldest of the bowl games by winning head to head competitions. These Are no opinions these Are facts. Fiche National championship is a poll of sportswriters and coaches started in 1936. The teams Are ranked by their schedule s perceived degree of difficulty and the perception of its execution. These Are not facts these Are opinions. For a sportswriter to suggest that Michigan s coach was silly and Provin Cial for focusing on the very Teal big ten championship and a trip to Pasadena instead of the mythical National championship and a White House photo of with Bubba shows Why Michi Gan places so Little value on the opinion of sportswriters. Open Simpson by Scripps Howard news service having publicly Zia Zaeger antagonized in his conduct of the . Simp son murder trial judge Lance Ito finally took charge thursday Only to flout the Constitution excluding the Public and press from jury selection. This drastic measure was then reversed by Ito the next Day and rightfully so. A criminal defendant s right to a speedy and Public trial is enshrined in the sixth amendment in a series of cases beginning in 1980, the supreme court elaborated the Public has a right to attend and observe the trial preliminary hearings and jury selection. A unanimous court settled that last Issue in 1984 in press Enterprise is. Superior court a Riverside calif., Case involving jury selection for. A rape trial. Only some overriding interest protect ing Trade secrets say or the privacy of a child witness would justify departing from openness. Even then the court Rulec any departure must be narrowly drawn " s sudden self assertion was Al the More puzzling in that selecting the jury in secret would not answer the con Cerns he has most often expressed. It would not Stop the press leaks and erroneous reporting of which the judge com Plains on the contrary it would make leaks the Only form of information Avail Able about what would otherwise be in contestable because Public proceedings. Nor would closing this stage of the Cess guard against juror contamination by publicity coming As it does after four months of saturation coverage. The prob Lem of jurors Cross poll ionization their being influenced by one another s testimony which Ito cited in his order thursday also seemed extreme. Prospective jurors have been ordered to avoid newspapers magazines television and bookstores an appropriately narrow restriction on their Freedom. Finally hts expressed concern that prospective jurors might not be candid if forced to answer potentially Embarrass ing questions in Public. But the Riverside decision Points out that such questions can be answered privately in the judge schambers. It is True that Ito presides Over a uniquely celebrated Case. The Fame of the defendant and the grisly double Mur Der of which Simpson is accused would make this trial sensational in any Era. Inthe age of can and court to and in Stant memoirs by alleged Best friends of the deceased the intensity of Public in Terest is unparalleled. For that reason sequestering the jury once it has been chosen seems inevitable. By the same Token open proceedings Are essential As the Constitution recognizes to satisfy citizens that Justice has in our 6oop, i want to 6ra&an tonight St terrine of banquet k47/on5.
