S4s Marian Hamilton Darlene Jensen s Energy makes her a Model for friends on and off the Job. Grandma reservist is strictly first class by Marian Hamilton Mediterranean Bureau i n the eyes of her friends Darlene Jensen is a first class lady. The Mother of eight and grandmother of nine is an actress and Model manages a modelling and Talent Agency teaches physical fitness Ana stress management runs a speaker s Bureau and represents the writers Guild of America. All that makes her special says her new friends in Naples Italy. But what shakes Jensen really special is that she is also a Petty officer first class in the naval reserves. Jensen recently spent three weeks at the naval support activity in Naples working As a military journalist for the base Public affairs office. Quot she is the most amazing person i be Ever met not Only for her optimism and generosity of spirit but for her determination to get into the military Quot said Karen la Gioia a teacher at the american elementary school in Naples. Quot i never dreamed that i would be in the Navy Quot laughed Jensen a 57-year-old California native. Quot i was very patriotic and loved people in the military but for me that was just something i never thought about Quot my husband had been in the Navy before we met and he loved it so much that right after we got married he wanted to go Back in the military. Quot but i was a Little Hometown girl and i thought i Don t want to travel that much. But 25 years later i  Jensen can Trace her interest in joining the reserves directly to the proposed equal rights amendment. Quot about 14 years ago everyone was talking about the Era Quot she said. Quot it was a big thing on College campuses. One of a a my daughters called Home from College and she was crying she was worried that she was going to be drafted. Quot i tried to Calm her Down but i pointed out that it s better to be in a foxhole and be trained than to have to go through the experiences that women have had throughout history like the revolutionary War and the pioneers without being trained for it Quot my daughter said that s Fine for you to say you re too old to  Quot i mentioned that conversation to a Friend of mine the same Day and my Friend said she was in the Navy. Reserves. She invited me to go along to the Reserve Center in Spokane Washington the next time she went so i went along. Quot i was hooked. I went Home and asked my family and they said go for it mom Quot Jensen made it by the skin of her Teeth it enlisting just two Days before her 43rd birthday would have made her ineligible. I never dreamed that i would be in the Navy. I was very patriotic and loved people in the military it for me that was just something i never thought about. A Darlene Jensen Quot it has been very exciting Quot she said. Quot i be trooped with the marines i be been in Foxholes with machine guns for Days the Only woman out in the Field. I be been at army bases Navy bases Marine bases and air Force bases. Quot i be Hung out of helicopters and taken pictures of marines jumping. I can t write about it unless i be experienced  her sponsor for the three week Reserve duty Petty officer 2nd class Jody Popich is one of Many impressed by Jensen s accomplishments. Quot this woman is awesome Quot he said. Quot she has done More things than i could even dream about and i consider myself a pretty Active person. Quot she was Only supposed to stay 17 Days including travel time Quot he said Quot but she stayed an extra week without pay to help us out. During that time she must have written 20 features for us a not Little things but full fledged . He said that Jensen could be equally versatile in her off duty hours. She and Popich explored the Island of Capri by moped and took City buses and trains after their ferry boat returned them to a port several Miles from Popich s car. They were also forced to spend the night in Popich s car after returning from a Day of exploring the beaches and spas of ischia Island. He had inadvertently parked it near a fish Market site that is locked up every night and could t get it out until the next morning. Quot she lives life to the fullest Quot Popich said. Quot she s constantly curious about everything going on around her. She s just wonderful wonderful people to be  Jensen is a Little More modest. Quot i feel very grateful for the opportunities i be had in the military Quot she said. The society was formed 30 years ago to promote the wearing of the Kilt. More than half its 500 members Are from outside Scotland. Its affairs would attract Little note but for its collection amassed from logins and donations. It includes Kilts worn by sir Walter Scott Robert Louis Stevenson and Queen Victoria s servant John Brown As Well As the definitive Register of All tartans. The collection has led to a struggle for control of the society and seen a group of members resort to the courts. The scottish charities office has granted an interim interdict preventing any assets being disposed of without the courts authority. This stops further artefacts being sent to the United states. The society is dominated by its president Gordon Teall who supporters say is responsible for creating the collection. Critics accuse him of being autocratic and running the society like a Highland fiefdom. His work with a tartan museum in Franklin n.c., is said to be at Odds with the Best interests of the society and its claimed that some of the collection has been lost. In an increasingly bitter Row it is even suggested Teall May be English. This summer the dispute has Kilt collection was lovers fighting mad. Transferred from Comrie in Perthshire to the Tolbooth near Stirling Castle where a new museum is to be established at a Cost of $1.5 million. The Comrie Home was too Small Only one sixth of the collection could be displayed at any time. But the move has not been without rancor. The museum is being run by the scottish tartans museum Trust headed by three scottish businessmen keen to see the collection properly displayed. But they Are not society members and there Are claims that the arrangements were made without the membership being consulted Teall is Allied with the businessmen who feel that the society has a priceless collection that is an important part of Scotland a heritage yet it is not properly displayed or catalogued. He shrugs off the criticism and talk of easing him into an honorary position when his term ends in 1996, saying he has no plans to give up the society a  i hold the society together a he said.
