But modern romanians dispute the numbers rather than the stories. They credit him with saving Romania from the turks who ruled much of Eastern Europe until the late 19th Century. Any atrocities against his own people were meant to teach moral lessons and were therefore excusable says Pacuraru. Pacuraru says that Dracula s murders numbered about 30, not 30,000.
