Big head Todd Heads Home for stratagem by Deedee Doke _ staff writer g oing into the studio to record their new album stratagem meant going to a Home of sorts for big head Todd and the monsters. A the Boulder theater is a turn of the Century performance Hall they d played often in their base Camp of Boulder Colo. It was up for Sale and vacant when the Mellow guitar Bass and Drums band was ready to record their fourth album a the second for a najor Label. They were familiar with the old theater s acoustics its atmosphere. And it seemed to be just the right place to do an album they planned to produce on their own. Quot we rented this old theater and just kind of set up and played Quot said Brian Nevin drummer for the Trio. Quot it was perfecting  fee it was Fate. There s a vibe in a room like that. You can feel the  together since 1986, big head Todd and the monsters biggest commercial hit to Date has been last year s bittersweet off their first major Labet album sister sweetly. 7 44sister sweetly was the most produced record we Ever had Quot Nevin said in a Telephone conversation from the states referring to the album s 7 refined and polished sound. On the new album the group wanted to strike a balance Between sister sweetly and a previous album Midnight radio that was recorded on a 2-track deck and radiated the band s rawer live sound a sound that has made Bhim a Strong concert draw across the states they wanted so badly to steer the album s direction and sound themselves that even a Lack of knowledge about the technical aspects of producing an album did t deter them. Quot that alone was kind of time consuming Quot Nevin said. Quot we Felt some pressure i think. We put ourselves out of the Comfort  the first song to get radio airplay a from stratagem was in the morning which moviegoers heard in the Jeff Bridges action epic blown away. Actually Nevin said the song was never intended to be part of stratagem. Quot it was an old song we had Quot Nevin said. Quot it was t made for this  but when it was used on the movie soundtrack released by a record company other than their own big head Todd and the monsters added it to stratagem to Quot appease Quot their own Label Nevin said. _ the movie however in t Likely to make Nevin s Quot Best of the year Quot list. _ Quot i m not out to Diss the film but we Don t recommend it Quot Nevin said of blown away.
