Offensive swear word to our readers coach applauded i More so than Many believe in our constitutional right to Freedom of Pur society places limits on what is considered to be tasteful or accepted bythe majority. I on the radio or television or in our major daily newspapers like the stars and stripes we May hear or see such As hell or Damn and for the most part these words Aren t offensive to the majority. Other swear words Are seen and heard in movies that we choose to pay and see and in other publications that Are known for their More Liberal perspectives magazines such As rolling Stone. But these More graphic typically not accepted by the main Stream for use in our daily newspaper Sand on network television. In the oct. 28 edition of the stars an stripes is a front Page Story on our Green berets in Kuwait who were leading the Way in the Effort to deter Saddam Hus Sein s recent threat. The Story writer quotes an unidentified special operations officer who used what i would consider to be a swear word or obscenity. The quote was in reference to what the special forces Leader was doing and is As follows he was leading the fight for the whole god country 100 Kilometres North of everybody else i m sure this officer was emotional when saying this and actually i Don t fault him for saying it or the journalist for including the quote. The journalist was Only doing his Job of reporting what happened. I question the editors and editorial policy of this news paper for using the quote. The information could have easily been paraphrased and still been communicated to the readers without using this offensive swear word. Sgt. It s nothing new every election year i have vote straight Republican but i voted for Henry Cist Riveros for mayor of san Anto Nio. I feel that mayor Cisneros did a Superb Job for a Democrat. He brought nigh tech businesses to san Antonio and san Antonio thrived while the rest of Texas did t now he is under fire from Republican Sand others for payments he made to a Girlfriend. So what else is new Cisnero resigned As mayor for this very same Rea son. He made the matter Public. This happened six years ago or so. Did he pay her with Public funds i doubt it. The Man is smarter than that i think. If he did to whose business is it who he paid when he paid it and for what reason i Don t agree with Cisneros having a Liaison but let s get real he did t hide the love affair so where s the problem 1 Robert h. Pearson Wiir Burg Germany in response to the sports commentary it s time to whine about the polls oct.27i pose this question to the writer Jim Litke exactly what is his definition of Whin ing. V none of the quotes pulled from coach Joe Paterno s teleconference suggested a complaint about the College football polls or supported Litke s observation that Paterno has replaced coach Lou Holtz As a i applaud Paterno putting the polls in perspective not second guessing who will ultimately be no. 1 with five games yet to be played in the regular season and concentrating instead on leading the Nitta by Lions to As successful a year As the team can attain. Jamie Lynn Swanson Derheim Germany give a town credit concerning the Heidelberg Kaiserslautern football game i am a a town varsity football player and your headline Hei Delberg rips a town was a very false statement being beaten 35-26 is Only a 9-Point loss and usually considered a close game. Your writers have been prejudiced to Ward us this whole football season. Even when we won our Homecoming against Frankfurt 33-14, we did not get the recognition that any other team in division i would have. Coming off a 0-7 season last year and a 1-6 season the year before i feel we de served More recognition than we have received especially since this has been our first winning season in years. Or Frederick f. Dembinsky or. _ Kaiserslautern Germany commentary whole world of cardinals in Pope s hards by Victor l. Simpson Vatican City the italian influence has waned. That s the major effect of Pope Johnpaul h s naming of 30 new cardinals from 24 countries. The polish born pontiff the first non italian Pope in 455 years has completed task begun in the 1960s making the col lege of cardinals an International body. A Accord 62puntries now is rep resented. Although the italian remain the larg est group they will number Only 19 among the 120 when the new cardinals Are formally elevated nov 26. Americans will make up the second largest group at 10. It will therefore be Ever less Likely to consider a future italian Pope concluded the Vatican correspondent of the Rorrie newspaper ii Messaggiero. In naming cardinals for the sixth time in his 16-year papacy John Paul has shaped the body that will guide the Church into the next Century and elect the next Pope. He has appointed 100 of the 120 re hats under age 80, who Are the Only cardinals eligible to vote for a Pope. The pontiff has apparently set the stage for electing a like minded conserva Tive who would keep up Church opposition to contraception abortion and to Mufti priests positions that Are alienating Many Liberal catholics with the 74-year-old pontiff showing signs of frailty Vatican officials have begun speculating on successors. The Pope s list of new cardinals includes the archbishops of Baltimore and Detroit and the first cardinals from Sarajevo Bosnia and Herzegovina and two former East bloc states. Europe still remains the dominant presence among the electors in the col lege of cardinals but european Mem Bers have slipped below a majority. The pontiff followed the example of Pope Paul i who led the Church from 1963-78 and expanded representation inthe College to 31 countries. Still the Pope made the choices his own. A cleric who stood up to communism in his native Poland before the soviet Empire collapsed he clearly decided to Reward others who had taken those named by the Pope were a 91-year-old albanian priest imprisoned for 37 years under the regime of Erver Hoxha an archbishop from Bela rus who spent 10 years in soviet prison Camps and the archbishop of Prague who was harassed by czech police under communism. The Pope also was sending a message of support for christians living under communist Rule by naming cardinals from Cuba and Vietnam and for the besieged people in Sarajevo by his appoint ment of archbishop Vinko Puljic at 49the youngest of the group. This nomination is in fact an appreciation for All those priests and nuns for All the people of god forced to live through the difficult trials of the War Puljic said in an interview broadcast by Vatican radio.
