Misplaced compassion it appears that the article stress piled up can turn moms into murderers nov.6 concerning the double homicide in Union , is trying to justify the Mas Sacre by stating reasons Why people com Mit acts. As if there Are Fath Mable reasons that would allow a person to sympathize with this woman. I guess it is admirable that some Seg ment of society is prepared to argue in her defense compassion for your fellow person is key to a better world but i sharing it we must afford this compassion to All of society. I am disturbed that the same sympathy has not been extended to african Ameri can males and people of color in general who must Bear the Brunt of America skewed racial mind set. As i mourn the children 1 can t help but feel pleased that she has shoved America in front of a Mirror to View its ugly scars and blemishes. Eric r. Johnson Naples Italy but what about How our people feel right about now in Union .? i m pretty sure they feel quite cheap and deserve an apology. However i know we will never get an apology just As we did Tafter Charles Stuart a White Man killed his pregnant wife and wounded himself and blamed it on a Black male. Black Man this is not the time to be sleeping image is out to be destroyed and what comes after our image. Let s be careful. Antonio Banks minister Germany we deserve an apology before i get into what my reason for writ ing is i m not trying to minimize the lives of the two Young children killed in South car Olina. I am sympathetic to any loss of life wherever or whoever it May be. Reading the article in your paper about Susan Smith i can t help but ask where is our apology. We Black Ameri cans deserve an apology for being once again falsely accused. We deserve Art. Apology for being once again harassed bythe Media and police one who abuses us verbally and the other physically. Where is the apology for our Black me who have been i m sure taken in against their will for questioning and polygraph test we demand an apology for our image once again being passed around the world negatively. Looking at Good Mornin America most of the Whites in that town say they Felt betrayed because they had helped voluntarily. Sure. We still have a Mission army to spend $2.5 billion More on Quality of life programs. Single Soldier initiative makes life better for single sol Diers. Army to expand child care services. All Are recent headlines indicating a fundamental shift in emphasis and Dol Lars in the army. More Basic than the apparent shift is the migration away fro the profession of arms to a mini democracy within the military institution. Where else in american society do behave an expectation often realized,.that we Are part of the management decision making process we May be operating More like the traditional japanese in our desire to influence organizational change. Where we differ is the level of commitment to a common goal and the True sense of belonging. We also May be losing sight of our principal Mission of being capable of con ducting combat operations both As a de Terrence to hostility and a Means to quickly terminate favourably War. The next time you see someone complaining about a service or Lack thereof ask yourself is this the voice of a team Mem Ber who wants to make the system better or just another selfish self entered and or self serving individual Are they working in the system to make it better or just trying to get the system to serve their needs Tough questions especially if they Are introspective but necessary. Some food for thought what is the Quality of life for a Soldier maimed or killed because other programs diverted Money from training what is the Quality of life for leaders who have to commit soldiers to Battle without the Best Arma ments and training Money can buy what is the Quality of life for the widower whose loved one had a great Garrison life but was not prepared for the worst Cas scenario and died i do not advocate any backlash away from Quality of life goals. I would like Tosee a common sense mixture in both the funding of and draw Down within each area. It s not guns or butter. It is butter until it impedes our ability to be proficient with our guns. It has often been said that the Soldier has the most to lose in combat therefore desires it the least. Our strength As a profession has always been that we did twant to go to War but were capable did t want to but let s not stray through apathy to Don t want to andean items in quotes borrowed from Tom Clancy s debt of Honor Steven Germany to our readers let us know what you think we encourage our readers especially those who have never submitted a letter to write to us. Commentary americans feeling pain of fed rate hikes by Scripps Howard news service in a world of fears and suspicions it makes sense to take preemptive strikes against a common enemy. To the Federal Reserve Board the enemy is inflation and the Only Wise thing to do or so the fed thinks is to raise interest rates. Raising rates seems like Good Public policy. As the fed often reminds us it is bet Ter to err on the Side of being too restrictive than on the Side of being too lax. Besides higher rates on savings accounts help retirees and others on fixed incomes. Thus for the sixth time this year the seven fed governors and presidents of five regional Federal Reserve Banks voted this month to raise Short term in Terest rates by three quarters of a per cent the sharpest rate increase since 1981. The presumption among inflation fighters is that higher rates will slow Down our allegedly overheated Economy and prevent future inflation without sabotaging economic expansion. It sounds logical in the Marble Halls where Money lenders meet but it cuts no ice in the Industrial towns where people Are looking for work. They ought to get out from behind their desks and see what s really happen ing in plants across the country says Jerry Jasinowski president of the nation Al association of manufacturers. Competition among companies both Here and abroad is so fierce that raising prices of finished goods can be risky even when raw materials Cost More. Demands for big pay raises Are equally risky in an Era of corporate downsizing. Instead of raising prices companies Are improving productivity and profitability by investing in new equipment and hiring fewer workers. trick that a scam off soups fair. Pm. Yet the fed insists that higher interest rates Are necessary to keep inflation contained and thereby Foster sustainable economic higher rates Are beginning to Hurt. \ housing starts fell in Dober an Indi cation that new Home buyers Are being priced out of the Market. Holiday shopping is Likely to suffer As Consumers face higher payments on Home equity Loans credit card debt and adjustable rate mortgages. The War against inflation is not a popu Larity contest rate increases were Justi fied earlier this year As conditions improved. But the time has come to Stop torturing ourselves and hold off on future in creases until we know More about where the Economy is going. Whew thanks Kotap. \ a i
