European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 24, 1994, Darmstadt, Hesse The romantic Road visitors at the Castle above Wertheim have a Lovely View of the main and Taubr Rivers. The 15th-Century Haszu Vriesen House of the giant is considered one of Germany s oldest hotels. A statue of Mary sits atop a column in bad Mergentheim s Market Square. The mesh Lebrunn in the Spessars Forest has been surrounded by water for the past 400 years. Continuedfrompage\3 seasons and even with the time of Day. The City is a Gateway to the Spessars a Forest area of Sandstone plateaus that hides Many wonders. Just 10 Miles to the Southeast is one of them mesh Lebrunn a charming Castle As Dainty and delicate As the Johannesburg is Burly. Surrounded by water mesh Lebrunn is one of the most photogenic spots along the Road. German language Tours of the Castle Are offered frequently and Are Worth the Price and time just to see the quaint Interior. The Castle by the Way is still owned by the mesh Lebrunn family which according to one source still lives part time in the Castle. Next on the tour is the Lovely town of Miltenberg which one Guidebook compares to Rothenburg. That might be a stretch but not by much. Half timbered buildings by the score Are the lasting impression of this town. Most impressive is the Haus Zum Riesen the House of the giant which dates from the 15th Century and is referred to As Germany s oldest hotel. A hotel and restaurant still operate in the magnificent building. The town sits squarely on the Banks of the main River and excursion boats leave from the nearby Harbor. A walking path along the River is never free of pedestrians. We skipped unfortunately the nearby town of Amo Bacn which is Home of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Maria and moved to Wertheim. The Road Between Miltenberg and Wertheim traces the main River for about 15 Miles of delightful scenery the narrow streets of Wertheim where the Tauber and main Rivers meet Are nearly covered by the half timbered building that reach out to one another. Above the town is the ruin of the Surmain fisches Schloss which dates from the 11 the Century. Its ruins provide evidence of How Germany s tourist Board came up with the name of our route. It is a romantic Jumble of empty windows and half crumbled Walls with a wonderful View of the town and the River Valley. The romantic Road moves on to Wurzburg with its mighty fortress Marienberg standing Sentinel above the River. The City is a treasure but does seem out of place on this route. It is a contradiction from the tiny villages and tree shrouded routes that Mark most of the route. We steered away from Wurzburg for the Sake of time and headed continued on Page. 6 4 stripes Magazine november 24, 1994
