The agriculture department s food and consumer service which runs the govern ment s largest nutritional programs re leased the study this week As the debate intensified Over the gop proposal to overhaul the nation s welfare system republicans preparing to take control of the House want to consolidate several nutritional programs for the poor including food Stamps school lunches and the Fleiss was entrapped defense says tos Angeles a attorneys for alleged Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss rested their Case after arguing that police entrapped her and that prosecutors singled her out while sparing clients. Testimony in the trial ended tuesday without Fleiss taking the stand and with the names of her alleged Rich and famous clients still a secret. During tuesday s testimony a police officer in the sting that led to Fleiss arrest acknowledged that he was the one who first mentioned sex to an alleged prostitute during a june 9,1993, meeting arranged by Fleiss. The four officers inthe operation posed As japanese businessmen officer Steven Takeshita s testimony was augmented by a videotape containing conversations Between four women and undercover officers. A portion show monday revealed half dressed women dancing humming and clapping their hands just before being arrested by take Shita and other officers. The video has been used by both the prosecution and the defense who con tend Fleiss was entrapped by officers inthe sting at the Beverly Hilton hotel. Takeshita admitted sex first was mentioned when he asked Brandi Mcclain if there were certain sex acts that she would not perform. Fleiss is charged with five counts of pandering for allegedly procuring four women for prostitution. In addition to arranging the june 9 meeting Fleiss also is accused of sending another woman to the hotel to meet with an undercover officer junes. That woman Samantha Burdette testified earlier that she was sent to the hotel by Fleiss and that she was to give the defendant 40 percent of her $1,500 fee for sex. In addition to five counts of pandering Fleiss also faces a cocaine charge. If convicted on All charges she could be sentenced to up to 11 years in prison. At the time the program served an aver age of 27.3 million people living in almost 11 million households. More than half of All individuals in the program 514 percent were children. An additional 7 percent were elderly and the rest were adults Ages 18 to 59. According to the study Foj Stamps represented about one fourth of a family s total income. The Schleswig Holstein state court ruled nov. 1 that Moller 47, must be freed because she is no longer dangerous and her health has seriously deteriorated during her 22 years in prison. Prosecutor Alexander Gramlich said thursday that the decision was justified. Moller then 25, was arrested in july 1972 and sentenced to life in prison plus 15 years. She has refused to participate in a psychological evaluation or express remorse. Estonian officials said Bozhko was sitting in a seat inthe plane with an 84-Pound Container by his legs. In a letter to the Pilot he threatened to blow up the plan unless his demands were met. Bozhko then walked off the plane and was taken int custody by estonian police. Toivo Klaar an estonian foreign ministry official who participated in the Airport negotiations said Bozhko had two accomplices who got off the plane with Theresa of the passengers and were later detained. But other officials said he had acted alone. . Mom attempted suicide twice files say Union . A Susan Smith tried suicide twice As a teen Ager by trying to overdose on aspirin according to court documents filed wednesday. In a 58-Page Brief prosecutor Tommy Pope said Smith was hospitalized for a week in november 1989 after a suicide attempt. Smith who was 18 at the time was treated for an aspirin overdose an emotional disorder and an acute sore Throat. She is charged with murder in the drowning of her two sons who were strapped into their car seats when the vehicle rolled Down a boat ramp into a Lake oct. 25.
