Baum older Germany witnesses to a fight last month Between two Baum older soldiers testified thursday that they did not see the knife that led to the stabbing death of a private. Pfc. Nathan d. Pohey 20, was arrested and charge with murder following a fight with 21-year-old pfc. Michael j. Crawford in a German club in St. Wendel about 12 Miles South of Baum older. Looney and Crawford were both assigned to the 1st army div s Btry 4th in 29th Field arty in Baum Holder. Pfc. William Benton and spec. Darrell Gosnell also both of that unit were among the witnesses thurs Day at an article 32 hearing for Looney. An article 32 proceeding is similar to a civilian grand jury hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for the accused to stand trial. A Hearg officer forwards his recommendations to the article 32 convening authority officer in this Case col. John Gingrich commander of the 1st army div  will decide if a court martial will be held. Gosnell who said he drove Looney Crawford and Benton to the club the night of nov. 12, testified that he had no idea Why the two got into a fight. Benton Testi fied that he was about 10 feet from the fight and noticed blood All Over Crawford s shirt after he  did t move Benton said. He just stared straight ahead with his Mouth  both Benton and Gosnell said they Only saw Craw Ford and Looney throwing punches to each other s head. They said they did not see Looney pull a knife or Stab Crawford. 1 military authorities investigating the Case found a fold out knife outside the club described As being Black with a Silver coloured Blade about 2 to 3 inches Long. The knife known As a Gerber knife appeared almost Brand new with no signs of damage or previous sharpening said a Soldier assigned to the Baum older criminal investigation come.  _ _ Benton testified that Looney had pulled a Black Han idled knife out of his pants pocket earlier that  that was the last time he saw the knife he said. 7 pfc. Keith Fowler also of the same unit testified that Looney showed him a knife with a Black handle and Silver Blade in Looney s Barracks room hours be fore Crawford s death. Fowler said Looney told him he got the knife to use at work. After collapsing at the club Crawford was taken by German emergency medical personnel to a Hospital inst. Wendel. He died there about an hour later. The doctor who gave emergency treatment at the Hospital testified that Crawford was unconscious and was bleeding continuously and had a weak  Stab wound was about 2 to 2j/2 inches Long and about1/8 Inch wide. The doctor said the instrument used in the stabbing bypassed the left lung and punctured the heart. Medi Cal personnel began operating immediately she added but within minutes Crawford stopped bleeding because of his damaged heart and died. It was a Good. Direct Stab the doctor said. Defense Counselor maj. Meredith Charbula told the hearing officer that sufficient evidence existed for an unpremeditated murder charge adding that a charge of involuntary manslaughter was More appropriate.  also said that there appears to be no motive in the slaying of Crawford and that Crawford also had thumped on Looney during the fight. Looney is being held at the army confinement facility in Mannheim
