During the 1994-95 school year 800 students received $2,000 interest free Loans from the retired officers association educational assistance pro Gram. ,. V " these Loans Are awarded annually for up to five years of undergraduate study to unmarried under graduate students under 24 years old who Are de pendent children of Active Reserve and retired serv ice personnel and their surviving spouses. The Competition for these Loans is keen. For the 1994-1995 school year some 2,000 students competed for 250 openings. � the students were selected based on their Scholas tic ability participation in extracurricular and Community activities and financial need. From 800 Stu dents receiving Loans 160 received special $5qo Grants in addition to the Loans. All who were awarded Loans were automatically considered for the Grants. The program was established in 1948 for the sons and daughters of retired officers and their widows. It has expanded to include the children of Active duty Reserve National guard and retired officers warrant officers and enlisted members of the army Navy air Force Marine corps coast guard . Public health service and National oceanic and atmospheric administration. Since this program was initiated some 4,300 Stu dents have received interest free Loans totalling More than $14.9 million.
