European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 30, 2007, Darmstadt, Hesse 6 stripes Okinawa an advertising supplement Friday March 30 2007 a traditional seven tiered doll display Hinam Tsuri continued from Page 1 Edge of these festivals and cultural traditions one of those cultural experiences in Japan occurs annually on the third of March for girls in Japan it is a special Day it is a Celebration for just being a girl we know it As girls Day but to the local population its called Hinam Tsuri or the festival of the dolls its origins Are traced Back to ancient China but it gained popu Larity in Japan during the Edo period 16031867 originally people made dolls commonly known As Hina Ningpo out of paper and then floated them Down a Stream the ceremony was a Way to get rid of bad Luck later it was combined with other traditions and evolved into what we see today the modern Day festival consists of a display of dolls either in the Home or in a Public display dolls Are set up at the end of february and remain on display through March 3the display is taken Down immediately the following Day it is believed to invite bad Luck if it is left up beyond that Day traditionally during the festival girls invite their closest friends for a House party special foods Are pre pared now schools or Day care centers will hold a separate party or Celebration too the dolls Are set up on a special tiered display traditional arrangements consist of seven tiers at the highest level Are dolls that represent the emperor and Empress the next Levels Are filled with dolls that represent ladies in waiting musicians and ministers of the emperor lowest tiers Are filled with miniatures of furniture carriages food and Musi Cal instruments dolls Are dressed in a formal ancient japanese style usually the parents or grandparents of a Newborn baby girl will Purchase a doll set some sets Are
