Farmer values free thinking togetherness s co c 0 d d co i 0 d d u the astronaut Farmer in which a Texas rancher Billybob Thornton builds a rocket ship goes its own Way in nearly every Way Lovely on Many Levels from its Gau Zily sunlit interiors and sweeping shots of stunning landscape to its warm depiction of family the Astro naut Farmer reveals an ornery individualism As it unfolds but what makes this film unique is that its All these things and also a grated family film Thornton plays Charles Farmer a onetime astronaut candidate constructing his own space vessel gleaming and enormous the rocket is difficult to sitting As it does at the Center of the Farmers barn and at the Center of the film but its Best to think of the rocket less As a real enormous object than As a Symbol of pursuing ones dreams despite Long Odds other Wise we would spend too much time wondering How this Guy got All the parts they dont sell space consoles at Kea the project is a family affair in spirit and mechanics from Charles wife Audie Virginia Down to his youngest child Sunshine played by Logan the farm ers All share his dream and teenage son Shepard Max Thieriot even acts As dads righthand Man he is driven to the Point of risking his land to make it on his own admired by Many but deemed an astronaut by others Hes certainly obsessed but is he crazy Thornton performance insists he is not the sometime wild Man wisely plays it straight Here Hes surrounded by enough quirkiness that he Doest need to Supply it himself the film opens with a shot of Charles in full space suit sitting on a horse before a gorgeous backdrop of Sand and sky the film was shot in new an image that impresses As much in its composition As its incongruity winking or stagy moments some times undercut the sincerity of the rest of the film but the libertarian Mes Sage is Clear Charles wants the governments hands off his and every one else air space the govern ment in turn seems interested not just in preventing disaster but protect ing its massive investment in its own space program they dont need some random astronaut exiting the earths atmosphere on his own As Media attention comes and goes Charles always finds strength in his family Audie gets mad enough at her husband who has drained the family Bank account to show that Shes not a Pushover but she loves her husband and her husband Hap pens to come with an unusual dream again viewing the rocket As sym Bolic is helpful in this Case so As not to consider the profound dangers attached to such an Enterprise the Farmers could be dreaming of a
