marines was Clear ing a sector in fal Lujah when several marines became trapped in a building full of the accounts on this Page Are about two marines who were decorated for trying to save and recover their fellow marines that by Jeff Schogol stars and stripes when Jeremiah Workman heard the squad automatic weapon open he didst think much of but when he heard the ak47 going he and the rest of his squad knew something was and by the time they ran to the House in where marines were trapped in the gunfire was said he stepped inside the House and saw two sergeants trying to talk to the marines the bullets were hitting so close to the head of one of the sergeants that work Man screamed for him to get the three went outside where Workman Learned that about six marines were trapped in the after coming up with a they were joined by a lieutenant who led Between eight and 11 marines toward the said then with the 3rd Battal 5th As soon As we get to the front the lieutenant backs out of the Way he peels off the so now in and in just of said of when the marines got to the name Jeremiah Workman unit 3rd 5th marines medal Navy Cross earned in Iraq the lieutenant told Workman to go up on the count of As soon As Workman started running up the bullets started to it was like one of them Damn cartoons where they shoot at the feet and the car Toon i mean it was right on my ass As i was running up the he by the time he got to a Landing that offered Workman realized that none of his fellow marines had been Able to make it up the Workman said he saw three of the marines trapped but he was unable to yell to them Over All the after being or dered to come Back Down the he dived Down the staircase to rejoin the rest of the i got Back Down and they picked me up and the lieutenants in going to throw a grenade up there to soften them Workman of the grenade bounced Back Down the but Workman and the others were Able to take cover before it went the marines then made a second As Sault up the and this time All of the marines made it Workman by this the three trapped marines he had seen were he would later learn that they had made it to the roof in an attempt to is Workman and about three other marines were now firing at the he was so close to another marines weapon that he was getting showered with the brass during the Workman would have to put Down his Rifle As fellow a Workman lines handed him grenades to i Felt to throw the id have to let my Rifle Down and then throw and that was one of the most awful feelings was not having my Rifle you Felt like you were after he grabbed his Rifle to Start shoot ing an insurgent tossed a Bright yellow grenade at it landed a few feet from the i had enough time shield my i yelled grenade and it went he said Felt like some one had hit him in the leg with a baseball but otherwise he was but the marines were running Low on Armuni so they had to run downstairs and outside the once work Man ran into one of the marines who had been trapped inside the the Man was bleeding and Stum so Workman dragged him to he went Back into the House and started firing and tossing grenades at the while making his Way up the he heard a bloodcurdling scream from behind one of his buddies had been hit in the Arm with an armo piercing ak47 his Arm was Damn near i it completely blew his Trice so he has no Hes trying to fire his Rifle with one and Hes not Workman and the other marines got the wounded Marine where the Man demanded to go Back into the i just his exact words give me a expletive pistol Workman he kept give me a expletive pistol this Guy wanted Damn near on his death bed from loss of blood and everything else he wanted to go Back into this House with a pistol so he hit was like one of them Damn cartoons where they shoot at the feet and the cartoon w Jeremiah Workman could keep he grabbed about seven magazines and ran Back into the once he was two insurgents ran at him and another Workman kept hitting the bad but they didst fall so he Slung his m16 and opened up with an ak47 he had on the two insurgents fell but then insurgents tossed another Gre Nade at the it blew up and knocked him Workman tried stand ing up against a but he ended up sliding Down against it and throwing i thought that was when in fact i was just so dehydrated and so overwhelmed with everything that i was passed he a major dragged Workman out of the Home by his he Learned that All of the marines were now accounted three were now the marines sat some As they waited for the airstrike that had been called in to level the his platoon commander was i dont know if he Felt like he had failed because we had lost Guys or but when i saw i started work Man now a Workman is credited for killing More than 20 insurgents that but he is unsure How officials arrived at that about two years Workman Learned he would receive the Navy Cross for his actions that Day in i think i almost instantly teared because it brought Back and All i could think about was the Guys we email Jeff Schogol at the grenade didst go off7 by Jeff Schogol stars and stripes two of his marines were the rest of his platoon was unable to reach and Marine 1st Alfred Lee Butler in and other marines in his platoon ended up leaping rooftop to roof top to Rescue almost three years Butler said his most vivid memo Ries of that Day Are of seeing his marines he hoped they were still but he had a sinking feeling that they were name 1st Alfred Lee Butler in unit 3rd 5th marines medal Bronze Star with v earned in Iraq already it was in and Butler commanded a mortar platoon with the 3rd 5th out of Camp now a Captain at Camp Butler would earn the Bronze Star with a v device for his actions that said he and his marines were tasked with Clearing out insurgents who had been bypassed during the fighting the month before or who had managed to Mark Marine corps Marine Richard presented the Bronze Star with v to 1st Alfred l Butler in in sneak Back into the City before troops could allow civilians Back while his marines were Clearing one insurgents tossed a hand Gre Nade at four wounding three of said of the four marines managed to make it outside to a second floor where one fell to the mortally he then an insurgent shot and killed a second Marine who was standing guard so his comrades could get at the Butler did not know if the two marines still on the second floor Patio were still he All we know is they Are upstairs and there is a lot of gunfire going on and weve got to go get so he took some marines and ended up jumping onto the roof of the building with the once they started Tak ing you hear the Butler you see the kind of puffs As they come off the Cement Walls As we were trying to make our Way Butler and his marines made it to the insurgents tossed a grenade at so Butler and another Marine jumped on the two i didst know if they you hear the you see the kind of puffs As they come off the Cement Walls As we were trying to make our Way f f 1st Alfred Butler in in the other marines in his platoon were he said he still remembers the cries for a every time you heard you knew one of your marines was by the time the insurgents had been three of butlers marines were including the two he helped recover from the he another dozen or so marines were but not i was one of the Lucky he dont ask me How that one of those a Little bit to the a Little bit to the right be Here kind of now Butler was faced were dead or but i knew enough if with the task of writing the families of they took More injuries they probably wounded and fallen Butler but the explosion they were awaiting never the grenade didst go because that would have been a bad Day for Butler said he helped get the marines from the Patio to the roof and then onto the this hit close to
