European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 28, 2007, Darmstadt, Hesse June 2007 stars and stripes Page 3 army buildup leads to housing shortage by Seth Robson stars and stripes Germany hundreds of military including some whose soldiers Are due to deploy to Iraq in face an average wait of up to three months for housing due to shortages exacerbated by the army rapid buildup in Grafe Wohr and Albert army Gar Rison Grafen ohrs acting chief of said in a news state ment wednesday that 332 families Are waiting for permanent housing within the Garrison and that the average wait time for a House is two to three of the 332 114 Are re siding in hotels on or off hotel like accommodations pen bed and or with family or the state ment those families Are slated to receive permanent housing one of the affected families is that of 2nd cavalry Stryker regiment Soldier Daniel who has lived with his Carol and 15monthold at Vilseck on Post the Kri stall since they arrived in Germany on May Carol Moreno said Grafe Wohr housing officials told her the family will not get even temporary housing before september and that there Are 100 other families in the same we Are living out of our household goods Are in Stor we Are not allowed to touch them until we get its been a said Carol Moreno As she cared for Matthew in the Kristall inn the fact that they wont get a House before Daniel deploys to Iraq in August Means he wont be around to help the family move Carol the family was not told about the housing shortages or the up coming deployment before they came to she the army should have told us up front what is going we were sent Here on concurrent or Ders which Means the family comes with you because there is supposed to be a House if we had known there was no hous we would not have she the family signed up for sponsorship before leaving the states but no sponsor has shown up since they arrived in Carol Moreno the hotel stay has been frustrating for the who have watched officers families arrive at the stay for a couple of then move to their new officials told the family they Are too Small to qualify for three bedroom houses and that there Are no two bedroom houses she the army claims to be so car ing for soldiers this certainly Doest prove it and it has really left a bad taste in our Mouth for army she housing shortages Are nothing new at Grafe Wohr and last year the garrisons housing office ditched a plan to House new arrivals within a 30minute drive off Post and started offering troops Homes As far As 45 minutes the Garrison recently acquired 88 units in the new military hous ing area at Netz Aberg but these will not be Able to accommodate the soldiers and family members arriving at Grafe Wohr this sum Mer with units relocating from other parts of weve already committed All of the 88 units to waiting Fame Schunk housing assignments Are based on rank and bedroom re he for exam the number of children in a family is one Factor in determining what Type of Many bedrooms a family will the other Factor is Grade cat ego Field Grade officers 04 and for Are not necessarily eligible for units that senior enlisted noncommissioned officers e7 to e9 May be eligible he Grafen ohrs director of pub Lic works Tom Hays said the most i demand units Are typically three and four bedroom the extended Waits Are More of a timing Factor than a housing Hays the Waits in due to the annual summer when High num Bers of military families Are Mak ing he it really is a matter of if enough people arrive before other people then were going to have these but we Are making the assignments from the waiting list and a fair Alloca Tion of houses based on the Hays i understand that people Are but were doing our Best hundreds remain on waiting list As of 332 families were on the waiting list for per manent according to army Garrison of 114 Are residing in hotel like accommodations or with family or the remaining 218 families Are in unaccompanied person Al housing on deferred living in the Barracks or senior enlisted quarters depending on or Bachelor officer private rental quarters government quarters or temporary set Robson to get them into quarters As soon As they become and we do expect to have enough houses for everyone until a Little later in the placing waiting families into private rental quarters for a Short period is not an and would have a negative Impact on future he if we place people at this time in private rental quarters and then have to move them out in 60 or 90 the landlords Are going to be very Hays they expect oneyear leases there not set up As so were trying to balance that out whats Best for the the housing Market and the email Seth Robson at by Seth and stripes Carol a 2nd cavalry Stryker regiment and her 15monthold have lived at Vilseck on Post the Kristall since they arrived in Germany on May housing completed or under construction the army has received 88 out of 880 buil Tolease military Homes at Netz Aberg and will receive another 78 units in another 82 units will be handed Over in Early 76 More in Early allowed by an additional76 units in the following Are among the several govern men housing areas newly completed or under construction Ebendorf 71 approximately 9 Miles North of pres Sath Kilmain All 40 units were recently completed and assigned to waiting families Steinfels 40 units 30 have recently been occupied and the remaining 10 units will be handed Over to the Garrison by the end of july plans also have been approved to transform four Large stairwell buildings at Vilseck into Large dwelling buildings and 1405 will be ready for occupancy this Walls will be knocked Down in these he to Combine and enlarge apartments to help satisfy the garrisons five bedroom another option being studied by housing officials is to assign families in High demand three bedroom Junior and senior enlisted categories to categories that have available for a family with a three bedroom requirement might be housed in a four bedroom unit if there is no waiting list for the four bedroom unit and it fits the family Grade set Robson corrections a june 26 Story about an Raf in gland based airman killed by a
