European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 11, 1967, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 6 the stars and stripes monday september 11, 1967 congressman suspects Caliper of Iran Aid by Dick West Washington up it May be assumed i Hope that Ina country like Iran a sense of fairness will always Iran Ever be attacked by Russia the iranians would defend themselves with Ameri can weapons obtained under . Military assistance pro in the unlikely event these Ever had occasion to defend themselves against americans they would do Sopwith russian weapons. I mean the iranians surely would t be so ill mannered As to shoot americans with american guns or turn soviet arms against the soviets. It would be a violation of military being the Case i Don t see Why rep. Otto e. Passman,d-la., should be in such a quandary. To Passman this seemed paradoxical. I cannot reconcile wit common sense or logic the fact that we Are giving Iran military equipment so that they can defend themselves against so Viet attack and at the same time Iran is purchasing from soviet Russia $110 million Worth of military equipment bemused. Apparently he was working from the premise that Russia would not Likely be cooperating in the program to prepare Iran s defences against Russia. Vice adm. L. C. Heinz director of the assistance program sought to Assur Passman that Iran s Basic commitment to the unite states had not been significantly weakened by the Purchase of soviet equipment. But Passman remained nonplussed it is All right with you if i Donot try to understand it is it not he asked. As i indicated earlier t Donot share the congressman s mystification. It seems Clear Tome that Iran is merely trying to be country if sufficiently foresighted will plan for eventualities that May never come. You can imagine How embarrassed the iranians would be if they suddenly found themselves at Odds with the United states and had nothing on hand for defensive measures except american , they would never live it Down.
