The quarterback or Star half Back generally gets All the plaudits while the line tends Togo unheralded but those seven men up front Are the ones who make heroes out of the backs. Knute Rockne of notre dam Fame it is rumoured proved this to one of the greatest Backfield in football annals his four horsemen when they tended to underestimate the value of the line by letting them operate be Hind a third string Wall during some heavy Irish did t fare too Well. Wiesbaden has t lost since quarterbacks etched niches in College Darmstadt Germany is quarterbacks who May play a prominent role in saturday Wiesbaden Rhine main Safe Germany conference crucial game saturday carved solid niches during their collegiate Grid Days. Rhine main player coach Dav Leggett was a big gun for Ohio state and was one of the heroes Leggett Maxfield of the 1954 Rose bowl Victory Over Southern California and Wiesbaden s Jim Maxfield earned his spurs at the naval Academy during the Days of Joe was a 60-minute Man in the Buckeye lineup dominated by Howard hop along Cassidy. The buckeyes won the big ten championship with their three Yards and a Cloud of dust of sense and a spectacular defense. Dave s principal play was the quarterback option run pitch out Call but he threw a 21-Yardtouchdown pass in the Rose bowl the Rose bowl Vic tory coach Woody Hayes Praise the team for its defense and cited Leggett for his Fine play. You Llave to admit our defense was tremendous he said. And our option play War our bread and butter play this Leggett played a Brilliant performed at the naval Academy in 1959 and his name is still etched in the mid Dies Grid annals for the most yardage passing in one game. He picked on notre Dame for290 Yards in the 1959 game. Despite his heroics the middie dropped a 25-22 verdict. Rhine main turned the trick inthe last regular season game of the 1964 Campaign. A Quick fast starting line has been the trademark at Wiesbaden during a 27-game winning skein longest in Safe or european command football. And coach Jerry Carlton had words of Praise for the 1967 edition. A coach is never completely satisfied with the blocking Carlton said recently. I have seen some things in our game films which thoroughly displease me but i must say that in Gen eral our Good blocking play shave been More Enumerable than the bad ones. Our offensive line must be do ing quite a few things right or we would t be averaging around40 Points a game. I have to cite Dick Ehley Felix Fuentes Bill Bennett Lance Young Ron Rahming and Pat Prekurat forgery Fine performances but i have to give a special accolade to Otto Puecker our line coach who plays both ways. He has been the key Man. Otto is one really dedicate football player. He knows the game and he loves to play it Carlton continued and what s More he has that tremendous Knack of making the other Fellows want to tear the football Carlton also mentioned the importance conditioning has played in the flyers Success emphasizing the importance of running running and More running i football. I think our general Overall physical condition was visibly demonstrated in the second Hal play in the Hahn and Pitburg games. We played much Bette football in the second half of those games mainly i think be cause we were Able to go full steam ahead in the final 20 min utes. In fact Carlton added,"1 truly believe that if there is any such thing As perfect football we approached it in the third period of the Hahn game. Jim Maxfield got so much Protection from the Forward Wall on his pass Calls that period that1 was amazed. Those Guys did a fabulous Job. If you give an quarterback five six or 10 seconds to find a receiver Chancesare hell connect on a Good percentage and i have to say that Jim is considerably better than just any the topic of the conversation broached upon defense a n d Carlton beamed. We re right proud of our de sense too Carlton said. I thought that our biggest prob lems this year might be defensive ones but the1 Fellows have really come through for us. This defensive team is a determined unit. I have never seen linebackers deluxe defensive coach Otto Puecker 54raymond Mcdonald and Chuck Snead 33 have been demons for the flyers in the line backing duties this year. Is the Overall attitude of determination and Good morale that this club displays game in and Gam out. The Way our people feel about getting the defensive Job done and the tremendous Pride they have displayed in a Job Well done have been big factors in our Success. This of course also applies to the offensive team. The of sense and defense have on common purpose to keep our winning string intact As Long a possible we know everyone is gunning for us but that make things that much More interest Puecker was lauded for Zhislin backing As a prime Factor on the defense but Carlton also singled out massive Bob Anthony 6-1, 265bill Elliott Tom Jack son Brian Hage and Sandy Sanders the hard charging front Wall for recognition. These men yield ground very grudgingly Carlton said. Others who have turned i splendid performances so far this season include Raymond Mcdon Ald Chuck Snead Gary York and Joe Best and our defensive unit work son the premise that the Best Way to halt a passing attack isto put pressure on the thrower. We work hard at this in prac Tice and i feel it has paid off in Rich dividends Carlton summarized. Crayton is an outstanding run Ner but Carlton also has Praise for big George s defensive Abil Ity. Defense is probably George s Forte because of his great Speed Fine tackling ability and football reaction. However he s a big cog in our offence and i sometimes find myself holding him out of the defensive align course As Long As we continue to get such Strong performances from the other defensive performers i can afford let luxury of saving George until be have the unyielding protectors wies Baden s opponents have found it difficult to Man Euver against the flyers this year. A big Mobile Forward Wall consisting of left to right Brian Hage Tom Jackson Bill Lyons George Elliott Bob Anthony and Sandy Sanders has been a big deterrent. Wiesbaden owns 27 straight wins.
