Moreover i seem to remember that the jews did have some earlier claim on this promised land and a number of them continued to re Side in Palestine even after the collapse of jewish statehood Fol lowing the roman Conquest. Jewish immigration to Palestine in the 19th and 20th centuries was not of course based on any zionist Conquest or on any particular Good will of the turkish or British authorities but on the Legal Purchase of land from Arab owners often Absentee ones the Enterprise of the jewish pioneers turned impoverished Palestine Long neglected by its Arab residents into a uniquely flourishing Region of the Middle East a fact which perhaps understandably aroused the envy fear and hatred of Arab neigh Bors with their socially and economically backward Way of  was the state of Israel handed to the jews on a Platte through som i form of Western betrayal As the letter  creation was preceded by a Long and bitter struggle against the British authority i Palestine which tended to favor the arabs in the last years of the mandate. I do not really know what the writer Means by the most heartless injustices of the israelis but i do know that the arabs have launched two aggressive wars against Israel in 1948and 1973, and have provoked two others in 1956 and 1967, by such actions As terrorist attacks on israeli lives and property at Homeland abroad starting soon after the 1948 Warthe movement of massive military forces to the israeli Border and the closing of the Straits of tiran to Israel shipping in 1967and the unceasing threats of varying Strid ency to liquidate the jewish state. It is noteworthy that not once since 1948 have the Ara states been prepared to end their state of War with Israel and recognize its right to exist. What the writer Calls a just settlement with the arabs israeli withdrawal from All occupied Arab territories the repatriation of palestinian refugee who wish to return to Israel is really a formula for the Liquida Tion of the jewish state by its in transiently hostile neighbors aided and abetted by the soviet Union whose peaceful policies have been amply illustrated bits forceful subjugation of Many ancient nations of Eastern an Central Europe. I cannot understand Why the writer should think that the weakening of Israel a demo cratic stable socially just progressive courageous and pro american land is in the inter ests of the . Even less do understand the suggestion that abandoning this Small land in its hour of peril would somehow redound to american Honor. However tempting the imme Diate advantages of a pro Ara policy might appear for example where Oil Supply is concerned think that it would be the height of Folly for the . To base its policy in the Middle East on co operation with the oppressive unrepresentative unstable and corrupt regimes now in Power in most of the Arab count Ries whose loyalty even to each other is Little More than verbal the writer must surely be Jok ing when he suggests that an anti Israel policy on the part of the . Would promote a United near  the political Dis sension among the Arab count Ries is notorious and the Only semblance of Unity which they seem capable of achieving fro time to time is based on hatred and fear of a Strong Israel. Reconciliation Between the arabs and Israel is desirable from every Point of View also to prevent the further cynical exploitation of this conflict by the soviet Union for its own imperialistic ends but it cannot be based on unilateral con Cessions by Israel. What is also needed is an Ara realization that this Small state of three million inhabitants sur rounded by a sea of vast  resources and popu lations represents no threat to the Arab world and is really irrelevant to its Well being. Real peace won t come to the Middle East until the arabs renounce their pathological obsession with Israel and desist fro their efforts to defeat it with the Aid of wealth and military Power both based on foreign technology and Aid. One can fully sympathize with the desire of the arabic speaking Peoples to emerge from their Long decline and recover some of their ancient splendor but an Arab re Naissance cannot be based on so Viet military hardware or burst ing accounts in Swiss Banks. I venture to suggest that i would be Best for the arabs not to mention the rest of the world to forget Israel for 10 or 20 years and concentrate on inter Nal reforms both social and eco nomic. When they arrive in the 20thcentury, the talented arabic speaking Peoples might finally recognize their hatred of Israel for what it is a pernicious obsession harmful to All the inhabitants of the Middle East and cynically exploited by outsiders for their own selfish .
