A feudin1, a fussin1 and a fighting by Walt Trott entertainment editor Lolly Madonna xxx is not a very Good movie. While probably meaning to condemn violence its scenes Are often so brutal that it defeats its own purpose. Apparently not taking note of this the motion picture Board of review could have taken a clue from the x s of the title in Grant ing an audience suitability rat ing. Not Only is Lolly chock full of shocking violence but it also contains sexually suggestive scenes which Are a bit much for pm audiences. Its Only conceivable Charm lies in a predictable Romance that develops Between Jeff Bridges and newcomer season Hubley. The film concerns a land feud Between two Mountaineer families the feathers and gut Shalls which soon gets out of hand. The patriarchs of both families Are embittered men who live by the idiom an Eye for an two very Fine actors Rod Steiger and the late Robert Ryan should have known better. As the feathers father Steiger does in fact seem to act As though he wish he were any where but in this film. Ryan is a bit More believable As head of the guts Halls. The movie s producer Rodney Carr Smith and sue Graf ton who authored the Book upon which the movie is based Are responsible for the trite screenplay. And for the most part Richard Sarafian s direction also is uninspired. The film gets underway after the guts Halls Plant a phony postcard signed by a fictitious girl Lolly Madonna in then neighbor s Mailbox. It says she is on her Way by bus to marry one of the guts Halls. As the perpetrators expected the Feather boys Rush off to the local bus Stop leaving their Pappy s still unguarded and at the mercy of the guts Halls. Meanwhile a real girl Hub Ley coincidentally arrives at the bus Stop and the feathers Kidnap her thinking she s Lolly Madonna. The x s in the movie title refer to a Symbol for kisses used in the signature line on the Post card after the guts Halls wreck their still the Feather sons react by raping a Gutshall daughter. One foul deed triggers another until it All ends in a bloody showdown. There Are some interesting new faces featured in the film including Hubley Bridges and Scott Wilson who do As Well As can be expected with such an implausible script. One wonders Why they even made the Effort
