European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - November 23, 1973, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 12 the stars and stripes Friday november 23, 1973 letters to the editor Al few Ai l1 ii41 a i of our misused language aka Buchwald the writer made a Good and overdue Point in writing about our use of English which is in essence Lazy. All languages suf Fer this problem and it is a big reason languages change slowly Over the years and is also Why Shakespeare would t under stand us if he made a return to life and Why few people can understand his work As he wrote it. We Are in varying degrees Lazy in our use of English and so it changes. Through misuse the meaning of words get twisted to describe what they originally did t and new words come into use to convey ideas older words describe quite Well. A by product of disciplined use of the language would be less misunderstanding and that would be Nice. There is a form of misuse of English the writer did t mention yes refused to Gas car hark we have a three Day weekend. What a great Chance to shake off the Barracks rat image and see parts of Europe. There is no better Way to Start your Day than to Stop at the bad Kreuz Nach yes service station at 0850 and have or. Harper and his Crew of two assistants refuse you service until 0900 hours which is opening time. I was in formed however that the gentle Man behind me was merely pay ing a Bill from yesterday and they could wait on him. Not one to waste time i promptly returned to my car and washed my Windshield and win Dows. When the clock struck nine i entered the service station and Low and behold someone had purchased Gas Stamps prior to me on the Ledger for that Day 1 sept. 73. I must admit that i was not surprised. Furthermore i was told they were out of Esso extra which they could have mentioned at 0850. While i am on the subject i would like to men Tion that on a different occasion another member of the illustrious staff requested permission to step in front of me at the class i store so he could return to duty. He mentioned that it was the Day before the Price of gasoline was going up and he was going to lock his door on a Long line of people at closing time. Strange that a Man could leave his place of duty to Purchase booze however he could not remain at work a few minutes late to help his fellow americans overseas. What exactly is the affiliation of the . Army with yes and Why do we continue to tolerate if not even subsidize their inadequacies that myself and Many Many of your other read ers continually write about specifically does the . The bad Kreuz Nach yes service station does t have Esso but equivalent the yes spokesman said in turn yes service stations obtain gasoline in bulk from four companies by Shell Texaco and Esso depending upon Geo graphical area and other factors. All the gasoline products Are of the highest Quality regardless of and it is seen More and More particularly with the . Govern ment and it is loaded with potential for misunderstanding. Here is an example of what i mean in the event an individual s initial attempt at achieving Suc Cess is frustrated attempt at tempt that s nonsense of course but we speak and write nonsense just like that every Day. We write additionally when we mean also subsequent to when we mean after at this time when we either mean now or Are using present tense and need t use either. Our written communications Are loaded with wrong words and too Many words and we generally defend the practice by claiming it is More precise which is More nonsense. We should learn to think when writing something which Many people will have to try to under stand. If our reason for comm. Nichting is to be understood and official communications can have no other purpose then let s speak and write Plain English. There really is such a thing As James w. Steeves Madrid Spain this is in reply to the letter murdering English languages a nov. 6.
