Joe Axelson Kings president and general manager said we understand and appreciate Bob Cousy s offer to step aside. He has served this franchise extremely Axelson said Young would serve As interim coach starting with Friday night s game at bos ton and a decision would be made on a permanent coach in the near future. Cousy announced his Resigna Tion wednesday night saying the team needed a new voice screaming at a native of Washington d.c., Young attended j. C. Smith University at Charlotte n.c., then played 4y2 years with the Harlem magicians. He was hand picked by Cousy to be the assistant with the then Cincinnati royals. When the royals became the Kings Young was named full time assistant and chief scout. He also was Cousy s assistant in last May s Basket Ball series. Up optimism mounted thursday that the Long uncertainty Over the status of the National league san Diego padres franchise would end Friday following an executive session of the City Council. Mayor Pete Wilson called councilmen together after a week of discussions with top City administrators and possible purchasers of the Ball club. At Issue is a new lease agreement for the City owned san Diego stadium. The team has 15 years remain ing on its 20-year agreement with the City. The new owners say changes Are needed to assure the franchise can be financially viable. The team reportedly has been conditionally sold to los Angeles grocer Vern Underwood and race track operator Marjorie Everett by financier c. Arnholt Smith. The Sale was apparently subject to obtaining a satisfactory lease and to approval of the new owners by the National league. The los Angeles group was believed to be the Only one bidding for the club that would offer assurances the team would remain in san Diego. A two jockeys were injured and four horses died As the result of a spill involving six horses in thursday s third race at Churchill Downs. Jockey Guilermo Milord suffered a broken left leg and a fractured rib while jockey Tommy Meyers suffered a fractured Fin Ger. Two of the horses were killed in the spill Sasabe and Michigan sails. Two other horses had to be destroyed condolence and Loyet yet. Michigan sails caused the spill which old timers said was the worst in Churchill Downs history. Flaming sword running very close on Michigan sails right hit the Bobbing horse then the spill occurred. The two other horses that went Down flaming sword and Royal cocktail were both injured but apparently not seriously
