European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 07, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday june 7, 1977 the stars and stripes Page 19 Oak Ridge boys the Oak Ridge boys on stage in London a High Point of the evening. By Dan Warfield is entertainment editor to categorize the Oakridge boys would be very difficult because we still do some gospel we re placing a heavy emphasis right flown country music we do some pop sounds and some Rock sounds so we re very diversified now in the Type of music that we do said Richard Sterban. He is the Bass Singer in the group he Speaks in Clear measured very deep ass tones the kind of voice that every radio announcer covets. 1tw Oakridge boys Long a strictly gospel quartet were among the better received acts on the Bill at this year s Wembley festival of country music in London. The stage act with costumes a Little choreography and comedy is reminiscent of the traditional gospel forms which they still do Well but they cooked on country tunes like Good hearted woman in love with a Good Timin a grammy award is one of the recent rewards of their new directions and their Star seems to be rising. It s been a dramatic turnaround forthe group gospel music was t making it when the Oak Ridge boys took Stock of where they were going a few years Back. Sterban recalled the Low Point of the group s Felt As though just singing gospel music placed a Label on us the word gospel kind of carries a stigma with it. People think that if they re going to go see a gospel group that they re going to a Church service and we consider ourselves entertainers not preachers or evangelists so we Felt we had to expand on what we we redoing to reach a greater number of so they signed with the Jim Halsey Agency of tuba the move that turned their hungry evenings into Busy nights. The Oak Ridge boys were on the Road for 238 Day last year and will play More than 300 dates this year. We were quite frankly louder Long. The Agency has done a remarkable Job with our group. They be got us on several of the to shows in the United states. They a booked us in several prestigious places. They be just constantly kept us on the go Halsey s management has brought the sound into the 70s, but even with the Modem country and pop songs Nowin their repertoire the gospel sound is still in there simmering in the background on arrangements of hit songs and shining on the gospel standards that Are still in the act. We still retain some of the traditional gospel songs. Whatever we do in the show when we go Back and do one of those old hand clapping gospel songs it seems like the response is just tremendous. 1 think we will always include some gospel even though we now no longer consider ourselves strictly a gospel the new horizons for the new Oak Ridge boys was a concert tour of the soviet Union last year. " we went there along with Roy Clark As a part of the cultural Exchange program that the United slates has with the soviet Union. We were amazed to see How the people in the soviet Union seemed to be overwhelmed by country we went on the stage they kind of took a few minutes to size us up you know we re americans new sound of new took we re dressed in Bright coloured outfits in Sharp contrast to anything that they have in their country. But once they allowed themselves to really get into what we were doing we established this feeling of communication Between ourselves and the audience. By the end of the performance they would not let us leave the stage. We were there for three weeks and every night they called us Back for like four or five encores. It was amazing. You would t think that country music would be a Success in the soviet Union but they just love it. Ile. Its i think country music is the music of the Peop basically a simple music the kind of music that everybody can understand. The everyday Man on the Street regardless of what country he lives in can identify with country music. It makes people feel Good and i think this happiness that s generated in country music transcends language barriers. What s coming up on this Side of the Atlantic the possibility of some military club dates was discussed at Wembley but nothing was finned up. Sterban is definite about his desire to get Back to England at least. This is the second time that we be been Here. We appeared three years ago at the Wembley festival and just from that one appearance we seem to have developed a following in England that is unbelievable. We have been anticipating this trip for some time now and we re really excited that it s finally Here Agan. We re Happy to be Here i Forsee the Oak Ridge boys spending a lot More time in this country. We have nothing firm in our Date Book right now but we Hope that before the end of the year we can come Back.
