The satellite is to be carried aloft in space shuttle America s next generation manned spacecraft which is to become operational in 1980. As the shuttle orbits 160 Miles High the astronaut Crew would open a cargo door and deploy the satellite whose thin string like tether would be automatically reeled off a spool by a computer. It could be Strung out to 85 Miles. The computer would control the position of the satellite the length of line deployed and the tension on line. At a signal from the astronauts the computer would reel inthe payload when its Mission is completed. Scientists came up with the idea As Means of obtaining Long term measure ments in the atmospheric Region 50 to 75 Miles High Between the Earth and the or biting shuttle. Little is known of this Region because atmospheric density there is not sufficient to support the flight of aircraft or balloons yet it is too dense for free flying satellites to remain for any length of Lime. Previous exploration attempts have been limited to minutes using sounding . A typical scientific assignment for the tethered satellite would be global mapping of the Earth s magnetic and Gravity Fields and studies of atmospheric and plasma physics Nasa satellite could be brought Back to Earth by the shuttle and be reworked for different types of missions. Other potential applications include Transfer Between two space vehicles retrieval of other Satel Lites and Transfer of Large amounts of Energy to another satellite or from Remote possibly hazardous Power source to a space unfeeling or retrieving the satellite could take several hours the system would have three safety mechanisms in Case of an emergency.
