European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 10, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Program director explains problems Friday june 10, 1977 the stars and stripes Pago 9 when to schedule s off there s Good reason by Barbara Fulenwider Sun writer Frankfurt s4s v an to pro Gram schedules and what you see on your tube Don t jibe to the minute there Are Rea sons. We try to keep the schedule within five minutes of Showtime but always five min utes earlier in the guides said Trent of irishman an to program director. That Way people won t miss a program if they tune in a Little late. If the monthly guides or the paper say a program is to Start at 8 10, it May nol actually Start until 8 12 or 8 15. We could give exact times but it would look kind of strange. It would be things like 8 31 2. So we think five minutes is close enough As Long As the guide says the show will Start five minutes earlier than it actually does Christ Man said. Less than 30-minute shows the reason an to shows Start and end at Odd times is that the 30-minute show As seen in the . Is actually a 24-minute and some seconds show minus its commercials. An hour Long show actually runs 54minutes. We could just hold on a slide and Start right on the hour but it would mean less viewing for the audience. We can ret in an entire extra half hour show because we have that much extra time Christman Only show that an starts right on the hour is the 6 . Newscast. The rest of the Day s programming is built around that newscast Christman said. We run shows Back to Back with some one minute spots. To get the news right on at 10 . We had to put in fillers and there were a lot of Long pauses and junk so i just said to hell with station gets five and a half weeks notice from arts on Basic programming such As Star trek. Mash Kojak Etc. I gets 16 weeks Advance notice on daytime programming but Only a week to 10 Days notice is Given on priority packages such As sporting events and Public affairs pro programs Are recorded in los Angeles and processed As quickly As they can get it out of the Jab and shipped to us. We get the written notice on a football or basketball game but unfortunately due to the mall system sometimes a program Doest show up. So this is where last minute program schedule changes occur on that priority stuff Christman said. There Are unavoidable changes from time to time. For example if we do a locally produced show that we consider a hot news item we might make a schedule change at the last minute but it s not done All that said the Stan and stripes saturday an to schedule for the next week is sent in three Days before publication to help take care of some last minute changes but the monthly television guides get their schedules six weeks in Advance because of their publishing reason that would Louse up the schedule is much of our material comes in on video tape and we inventory it. If the tape is Here we assume it u going to work. But sometimes the tape is Unai Rable for one reason or another. We preview this stuff a Day or two ahead of broadcast time and sometimes they Aren t recorded prop Erly. Then we have to make a last minute substitution. That has happened to us a couple of times Christman have an incredible relationship with the film Industry Christman said. We pay a Flat fee for whatever shows we want. U could be sesame Street or Mash. And the economics of this business Are in s say it costs the producers of Mash $300,000 per episode and the net work buys it from them for $150,000. Obviously the Guy s already in the Hole so to get his Money Back he has to sell it for our purposes it s a lot better to wait until a series finishes its production season than try to get a series fast. That Way we can schedule 26 shows with no Breaks. In the states the networks will run two new episodes then they la cancel the third one for a special of some kind and then it s Back to a rerun then Back to a new one. That s How they spread the shows out Christman said. It Means that we run from nine months to a year behind new stateside series but it s the Only Way we can do it. And in the same time period our viewers get two Dif Ferent series in a year and they won t Sec any reruns. The Only time we repeat shows is in the morning for shift workers. If we paid the going rate for the pro Grams we run it would Cost Well Over $100 million a year and our budget is just a Frac Tion of that. So we re getting $100 million Worth of programming for peanuts he said. Kissing Booth spec. 5 Jesse Coronado puckers up for a big Cine at his i song Booth at the Wurzburg carnival. Wurzburg Community Kontak coordinator decided to try something different for a fund raising project As part of the carnival this year. The trend Back Home lately has been setting world records so Coronado figured Why would t it work Here finding the most desirable world s record to break was easy for him a kiss ing Booth just the right thing for a Carni Val at 50 pfennig a kiss. He set to work gelling his lips in shape after All. "1 just wanted to do something for the Wurzburg civilian Community before i leave to go Back to the Coronado said when complimented on his feat for Charity. Wurzburg s been Rood to me so 1wanted to repay them somehow at one Point during the Day when the kisses and the contributions lagged Coro Nado put his lips to another use and told passers by the reason for the kissing if everyone could look inside himself and see How Good he or she has it and could realize that a lot of other people Don t have it so Good maybe we d help those less fortunate a Little More his Short speeches from the Booth encouraged no kissers to dig in their pockets and donate Money.
