The new yorker Magazine in an article received Here with some interest states that just about everything done by some of the press columnist Jimmy Breslin Foremost has made a bad situation worse for the residents of new York. The Magazine states As the first anniversary of the killer s first murder july 29, approached the news indulged in a frenzy of non news that must have driven the son of Sam to a frenzy of determination to deliver As expected though not when expected. In the news the Day before the anniversary Jimmy Breslin s column was announced on the front  in june of this year Breslin received a letter from someone claiming to be the killer who wrote that he was a fan of the columnist s. Another journalist might have Kep the news to himself but Breslin did not. His july 28 column quoted part of the  new yorker complaint came As a sur prise to both myself and the police depart ment. One can understand the desire to write something about the Case but in attempting to be so above it All so removed from the grime of everyday life they neglected to go after such Little things As facts. On Jan. 30, 1977, Christine Freund was killed at 12 20 . By a .44-caliber gun while she sat in a parked car with her Fiance Johntiel in Forest Hills. There was no Breslin column before or after this  March 8, Virginia Voskerichian 20, was killed at 7 45 . While walking Home fro the subway in Forest Hills. She was shot less than a Block away from the scene of Freund s  was at this time that i wrote my first column about these shootings. I did not know then that they were All connected and neither did anybody else. I stood with a detective named Tony Cama and he asked people if the had seen or heard anything at the time that Voskerichian was killed. Then Cama talking about the two killings of Freund and Voskerichian said they re checking Down in the morgue now to see if the bullets Are the same. It they Are we got a nut to put up  my column was in the paper the ballistics people said for the first time All these shootings had been done by the same weapon the .44.on april 17, Valentina Suriani and Alexan Der Esau were killed by the .44 killer while they sat in a parked car alongside the Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx at 3 .again, there was no Breslin column either before or after the  night there was a note left on the ground alongside the car. The note was addressed to capt. Joseph Borelli of the Queens homicide detectives. The note was hand printed chilling and signed son of  the note was not released to the Public and i did not write a column about the note. Last May 15, i finally wrote a column in which i mentioned walking around the streets of my neighbourhood with a detective who adjust been assigned to the Case. Then on june 2, a thursday there arrive din the offices of the new York daily news a hand printed letter addressed to me and signed son of  the letter was sent immediately to police Headquarters and later in the afternoon the Laboratory reported to John Keenan chief of detectives that the letter was the same As the letter left for capt. Borelli. That night i went to a second floor office at the 109th precinct in Flushing the Headquarters for the .44-caliber investigation and sat with chief of detectives Keenan Deputy in Spector Timothy Dowd in charge of the investigation Borelli and several  police wanted the letter to me released to the Public. The purpose was to induce this Man who Calls himself son of Sam to write again. Take notice of him Appeal to him. Who knew what would happen but everybody at the meeting agreed on one thing there was an Opportunity Here and it entered on my column and we had to hop that whatever i wrote that caused him to write the first time would bring him Back. If you could get this Guy writing again if you could get him to Call then you had a Chance to capture him and save lives. Chief Keenan had a suggestion for the column and i remember that on the next Day i went with inspector Dowd to see a criminal psychiatrist in Manhattan and the Psychia Trist read my letter from son of Sam and he too had suggestions on what should be included in the answer. I then went Back to the news and decided to forget what everybody had suggested and to write the column Myown Way. It appeared on june 5. On june 26, in the same manner As always the killer wounded Judy Placido and Sal Lupo As they sat in a parked car in Bayside at 3 30 . In the Days that followed however there was More and More writing about july 29. The police believed it was an important Date in the killer s life and they were fearful of him at tempting something on that night. Some of the police were particularly worried that the killer might spread out might leave Queens and the Bronx and go  had to write a column for the edition of thursday july 28. In All the newspapers on All the television in every conversation in the parts of this City where people live there was Only one topic the son of Sam. I do not have the Constitution of a new yorker writer. In the new yorker s july 25 report on the blackout for example the mag Azine devoted one Page to Diana Vreeland having dinner in Greenwich Village and expounding on blackouts in Paris when i opened my desk at the Crillon it was All can  the new yorker did not print a line about Bushwick where so much of our City fell  prefer to write about Bushwick rather than Diana Vreeland. And on july 28th i wrote a column about exactly what i had to writ about son of Sam. In the column i wondered about the killer and i concluded that i did know much and neither did anybody else. I said we were dealing with the night  this column the new yorker states of course the letter to Breslin had said nothing about any intentions of killing again on the anniversary and of course it was Breslin. Who saw fit to print the idea that the killer might go out the next night and find a victim journalism schools could use these Para graphs As examples of  schools might also be interested in using the new yorker article in a Dis Cussion of motives for writing certain things. For Here in making a serious charge the new yorker omits the first column i wrote about the 29th, complaining about Beame blowing it up and then uses Only the second one which was printed at a time when there was nothing else i could have written about except of course Diana Vreeland. And if the Magazine had bothered to do any reporting make even one phone Call it might have heard that police Felt that the killer was in Brooklyn stalking and staking for at least a full week before the weekend he struck. Police have reason to believe that the killer repeatedly visited every area before shooting. The notion that a column by me on thursday july 28, would Send the killer out to destroy in Brooklyn two nights later could Only come from someone who has not seen the complicated network of streets the killer had to learn in order to get away. The Magazine ends the article by picking up a report from the new York Post the Only newspaper i Ever have read whose weather report is factually suspect. My Mother had to die with her sins but i must live with my Lack of compassion and the knowledge that i set myself up As he judge.
