The Rev. John t Conner said at a news conference that Carter and the american people must become aware of the fact that the abortion Issue is of As great importance to our protestant and jewish constituents As it is to the Catholic Conner is one of the 11 religious Lead ers who say they have been seeking a meeting with the president since february to present their View that Abor Tion should be a decision made by a woman and her physician. We too wish to have our voices heard on this matter and we will not be put aside easily Conner said. For us the Issue is one of religious Freedom and we Are prepared to defend that Freedom Carter met last week with roman Catholic leaders who commended him for opposing use of Federal Money for abortions for poor women and Conner called upon the president to meet with leaders of his group too. It is incumbent upon the president to become knowledgeable about the theological and moral beliefs on abortion held by All the religious bodies in this country he said. Carter repeatedly has said he opposes abortion except in cases of rape or incest or when a woman s life is in danger.
