Yankees second Baeseman Willie Randolph loses the Ball and winds up standing on his head after being Tum bled by the Kansas City royals Hal Mcrae on a disputed Force play in the sixth inning. The royals scored a run As Randolph was upset but the Yankees went on to win 6-2, at Yankee stadium to Square the Best of five american league playoff series Atl-1. A by Fred Rothenberg new York a Ron Guidry won the crucial second game for the new York Yankees but Birdie Tebbetts is credited with a save. According to Kansas City manager Whitey Herzog it was Tebbetts the Yan Kees chief scout who vetoed the Deal that would have sent the lanky Lethander to the royals two years ago. I thought the Deal was made said Herzog. Then Tebbetts stopped Herzog would have loved to see Guidry on the Mound for the royals but he was very much in a Yankee uniform As he threw a marvelous three hitter thursday night in leading new York to a 6-2 Triumph that tied the Best of five american league playoff series at one game apiece. The series now moves to Kansas City with the royals 20-game Winner Dennis Leonard picked to Start against Mike Tor rez a 17-game Winner for the Yankees Friday night. Guidry pitched a really great Ball game said Herzog. He had great stuff a great breaking Brill. He s a real Good the royals would seem to have the Edge with the next three games at Home where they have played at a winning clip of 38-7 Over the last three months and 55-26 Over All. I guess i have to be satisfied with a split going to our Home ground said her sliding acts incense yanks continued from Page 21 fied said the umpires almost let the game get out of hand. We were about As close As you can come to a fight out Lou Piniella who delivered a key single during the Yankees three run sixth inning that snapped a 2-2 tie said i m begin Ning to think these clubs Don t like each other. It s starting to get like our rivalry with Boston. We re playing harder against each other. We re really going out after each other. But that s Good. Mcrae likes to play the game rough and Tough. But that s All right. The Only thing that i question was that he was holding our Sec Ond baseman about 10 feet behind the the uproar Over Mcrae s slides some what overshadowed Ron Gir dry s three hit pitching and the hitting of Cliff Johnson who knotted the game 1-1 with a fifth in Ning Homer and put the Yankees in front for Good with a run scoring double in the sixth. I did t feel any pressure i Don t really know what pressure is said Guidry. I had a game plan. I wanted to keep Al Cowens off the bases and not get behind the hitters too often. And i think i followed Johnson had premonition on second Chance Homer by Martin Lader new York up it was almost As if Cliff Johnson knew what was going to Hap pen. There he was the Center of attention of 56,230 fans and a National television audience with tears in his eyes. Twice he had to hold up play to Call for a Towel to wipe the water away. A few moments later Johnson had Good reason to cry when he hit a Home run to Centerfield and was Given a standing ova Tion As he rounded the bases. When i left the on deck Circle my eyes were watering a Little bit said Johnson the 6-foot-4," Sais Johnson the 6-foot-4,225 Pound designated hitter who does t seem to be the Type to cry too often the wind kept blowing and my Eye was watering. One one occasion the Ball Johnson s Homer in the fifth inning thursday night was Only the second hit off Kansas City starter Andy Hassler and tie the game 1-1. In the sixth Johnson keyed a three run rally with a run scoring double As the new York Yankees went on to Post a 6-2 Victory ovre the royals that dead locked their american league Champion ship series at one game apiece. Johnson obtained just before the trading deadline from Houston had one Lucky break to be thankful for. Just prior to his Homer . Catcher Darrell Porter missed a playable foul Ball behind the plate that gave Johnson another Chance. I was thinking that the last time the royals were in there was another controversial play where i got another Chance said Johnson referring to a Ball that was ruled foul after it hit his foot and he followed with a Homer. I thought his tory would repeat the Yankees had a lot to be Happy about particularly the Strong three hit pitching of Ron Guidry but even after the game new York manager Billy Martin was still upset about an incident in the top of the Kansas City runners on first and second base and one out George Brett continued on Page 24 my game plan exactly. I started off with fastballs and when i got a Little tired i went to the Slider. I had a Good Slider All night. Then when i went Back to the fastball i still had Kansas City starter Andy Hassler was working on a on hitter and had retired 11 batters in a Row when Johnson drove a tremendous Home run Over the 417-foot sign in Center Field. Just before connecting John son had to summon first the Trainer and then the Bat boy with a Towel to wipe his eyes. When i left the on deck Circle the wind was blowing in my eyes and i could t Stop them from watering he explained. I was just looking for the Ball and i thought it was a fastball up and out Over the Martin a scrappy second baseman in his playing Days who had More than his share of brawls on and off the Field was asked if he was disappointed that Randolph did t go after Mcrae. Well he said. Two Guys tried that on me when i first came up. I hit the first Guy in the Mouth with the Ball and i hit the Sec Ond Guy in the face with the Ball and broke his nose and his glasses. But my second baseman is a Walton sidelined with Back trouble Portland Ore. Up bed rest for 24 hours was ordered thursday for Portland Trail Blazer Center Bill Walton who has been suffering from a Back muscle spasm which kept him sidelined the last two preseason games. After missing Friday s game against the Golden state warriors in Seattle he Proba Bly will not be Able to play against los an Geles Here saturday a team spokesman said. Or. Robert Cook said the Outlook for Walton s return to the lineup after the next few games was Good. Zog. But you still have to play the game even with the Home Field the royals took a 1-0 Lead in the third when Catcher Darrell Porter walked hustled to third on Frank White s single to left Center and scored on Fred patek s Sacri fice Fly. But Porter helped give that run Back in the fifth inning. Yankee designated hitter Cliff Johnson lofted a sky High foul pop behind the plate. Porter turned the wrong Way and made a lunging Stab that really never came close to the Ball. Given a new life Johnson smashed a booming Home run to Center Field for the Yankees first run. I feel i should have caught that Ball Porter said. Before the Homer royals starter Andy Hassler had retired 11 straight batters but the royals finished the fifth inning trailing 2-1 on Bucky Dent s rib single. They tied it in the sixth on a highly controversial play. Fred patek laced a Lead off double to the right Center Field Wall and Hal Mcrae the next Batter up walked. George Brett who is l-for-9 in the series hit a ground Ball to third baseman Graig Nettles who fired to second baseman Willie Randolph for the out. But Mcrae s rolling Block sent ran Dolph tumbling to the ground and in a tangle of hands and legs with the Kansas City designated hitter. Meanwhile with Randolph struggling to get up patek sped Home with the tying run. I be got three feet on each Side of the base when i slide if he s close to the base said Mcrae whose slide into second base was termed unprofessional by Yankee manager Billy Martin. If you Are going to Knock him Down you have to step up into him. If he slides he just jumps Over you. I m not trying to Hurt him but i m not trying to make it easy for him either. I m competitive. I used to do this in the nation Al leave when i played there. I want to win and that s All there is to i guess that kind of play depends on what Side you re looking at said Herzog. To us it looked like a Good play. To Billy Martin new York s manager it probably looked like a dirty either Way the play seemed to ignite the Yankees who broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the Bottom of the sixth. No Way said Mcrae. The play produced a run. I Don t see How that could ignite anybody. I Don t know How they play when they re angry but they re Gonna be angry a lot. If i have a Chance to Knock one of them Down and produce a run i m Gonna do the Yankees moved ahead 5-2 in the sixth with two of the three runs coming with two outs when third baseman George Brett could t handle Randolph s hard ground Ball. The Ball was right in front of me i tried to go Down to Block it but it skidded said Brett. I think the problem was the same Guy hit one that came up yesterday and i was t sure which Way to go yes it was an error definitely an penguins get Caps Paradise Pittsburgh up the Pittsburgh penguins have obtained defens Eman Bob Paradise from the Washington capitals for the rights to free agent defens Eman Don Awrey.
