He was the Only competitor dressed in what was once the common habit of Golf ers. Walter Machlett 81 years old on the Day the tournament was held was one of 176 participants in the Best Ball foursome event. His tee shots weren t the crunching Long drives that once marked a solid Golf game but his Chipping and putting were Superb. I feel like i m 35, not 81." said the Man who has been Ramstein s starter for 17 years. This tournament was a lot of fun and the Ramstein people have been wonderful to me. I be just really enjoyed  Machlett did t win the tournament that bears his name but. To him it did t matter. What did matter was the Strong turnout of people from Heidelberg. Wies Baden Baden Baden and Hahn. Who joined a tournament to Honor a Friend they have known Over the years. Machlett s group was t eligible for the prize anyway As his was a stacked four some that included Clyde Sniffen the Safe Champ. Carmel Sniffen. Wood Lawn Golf club s women s Champ. Frank Malally assistant club manager and Machlett who won the California open in 1926. The foursome of Howard Hughes. De Mault Larry Olson and Jeff Schwigen won the tournament at 10-under Par.
