European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 24, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Art Buchwald monday october 24, 1977 the stars and stripes Page 11 Washington if there is anything that really bugs me it is watching a pro football game with a foreigner. I had the experience last week. My Friend was visit ing from London with his wife and they both seemed very excited about seeing their first american football game on Tele vision. It happened to be the Redskin Dallas game and for a Redskin fan i knew it was t going to be much fun. The game started out All right but before Long it got rather bloody. This is when they Bot started asking questions. Is the object of the game to injure As Many players on the other team As Possi ble the husband asked. No that is not the object of the game i said. The wife said do you get More Points for breaking a Man s leg or his neck you Don t get Points for breaking either his leg or his neck. You get penalized for of said the husband. What is the penalty your team is penalized 15 do you mean to say that if you break an opponent s leg you Only get 15 Yards against you what do you think he should get i said trying to hold my England i believe it s three years in prison the wife s a game i said. The men who play expect to have their legs s what makes it so of course said the husband. One must expect a few minutes later the referee walked off 10 Yards against the redskins. I did t see anyone get Hurt the wife said. Why is there a penalty because one of our men was holding one of their what is the penalty for that ten do you mean to say if you hold a Man the team loses 10 Yards but if you break his leg you Are penalized onh/15 Yards the wife asked. I was beginning to lose my patience. That is Correct. In football holding is almost As serious As breaking someone s of course the husband said. It Doe make sense when you explain in the second Quarter the wife turned to me. Did you notice one of their chaps hit one of your chaps with his fist that s not permitted i said. Everyone on television must have seen it she referee did t see it. If he had he would have called a personal which Means the player would be thrown out of the game the husband course not. You Don t get thrown out of the game for slugging another player. If that happened you would t be Able to have a pro football game. The thrill of football for a player is to hit an opponent and not get caught doing one of the redskins was stretched out on Field groaning in agony. How Long is he permitted to lie on the Field the husband asked without being penalized As Long As he wants to. When a Man i seriously injured we even permit a doctor to treat How civilized the wife said. I could t keep my temper in any do you think we Are Barbari ans quite the husband said. Letters to the editor he s an overweight go but proud i was recently barred from reenlistment for being overweight and would like tomake a few comments about it. I do not agree with the actions being taken against me for being overweight. I have had this problem All my life and it seems to me that if the army did not want overweight people they would not accept them in the first place. The bar to reenlistment states that have not made satisfactory Progress in the overweight program. To me this implies that i am not trying. This is completely false. I participate in a daily exercise program and run More than two Miles daily Al though i am not required to run every Day. I have Cut my food and liquid consumption in half. I am really trying but my weigh continues to fluctuate. My military record is flawless. I do my Job to the Best of my ability although i do not always agree with everything i am made to do. I have made a commitment and i will fulfil my end of that commit ment to the Best of my abilities. Although i will be eligible in a month i cannot be promoted due to this bar. This of course Dampens my enthusiasm to do a Good Job or stay in the army. They Tell me that being overweight will shorten my life. This May be True but so do Many other things and nothing is being done about them. The stars and stripes recently printed series of articles about smoking but cigarettes continue to be sold at such a Low Price that no one wants to give them up. And the prices on alcohol Are still Low enough for a person to get bombed every Day if he or she wanted to. I reluctantly accepted the bar but i really feel that this should be applied equally regardless of rank. Yet there Are overweight people who Are being Al Lowed to reenlist and not being put on the program. I intend to lose this weight but i do not like to be constantly told to lose it by my superiors. We overweight people have our Pride and feelings too yet the army makes me feel . John Yuill Schweinfurt Germany ghettos unconcerned people in reference to a recent article in the stars and stripes titled Blanchard wants end to housing ghettos for forces in Ger Many i would like to express my View of the subject. For two and a half months i have lived Here in the ghetto of Benjamin Franklin Village. And it s not the housing that s the cause of our ghetto it s the people them selves. I have never in my life seen so Many in concerned people. From the area coordinator to the stairwell coordinator the Buck gets passed and the results Are nil. Children pull up plants tear fences apart walk their dogs on the playgrounds empty the garbage on the Way to the dump word to the wolves today in the Exchange parking lot i witnessed an incident which has become All too common in our society. An attractive Young woman was walking to her car with an Arm Load of packages. Half a dozen gis were driving past in a military truck. As the Young men passed the woman the truck stopped dead in its tracks and six Heads turned to follow the direction of the Young woman s walk. A couple of the men made suggestive remarks and the woman obviously embarrassed hastened toward her car. I Don t think these men were trying to be unkind and surely if they knew the discomfort and embarrassment a woman feels when harassed in this manner they would t have behaved like this. In fact i d be willing to bet that these men found the woman attractive and per haps they thought that 180-degree Turna bouts and uttering Sweet nothings would be complimentary. Gentlemen this is not so. A woman is not a sports car a piece of sculpture or an inanimate object. She is a thinking feeling person. Wolf whistles leers and suggestive exchanges Only lower her from the important recognizable status of a person to that of a thing. The Story could have had a Happy ending. Perhaps a More positive approach would have been for the Young men to recognize the woman s presence on a person to person basis rather than a person to thing level. A nod a smile perhaps even helping her with her packages would have made the Exchange interpersonal and More fulfilling to both parties. Michele m. Jaworski Ramstein a Germany Ster and look at you with a who do you think you Are to Tell me what i can and can t do look. And As Long As the parents Aren t bothered they could t care less. Although Many of these people Are living in apartments that Are probably the nicest they have Ever lived in they Are usually the first to complain. The one Good thing about living in the German Community that Gen. Blanchard recommends is that the americans would be forced by German Law to clean up their outside mess or pay the fines. I wonder How Gen. Blanchard would handle those complaints. Name withheld Mannheim Germany petted a Tarantula this is in reference to your recent re quest for volunteers to Check out a set of Tarantula fangs because i was bitten by a Tarantula three years ago in the Mojave desert. I was petting it because it looked so soft and furry. I guess it got mad because it bit the Little Finger of my right hand. I called the emergency room and they said not to worry about it unless i got sick to my Stom Ach. They replied As or. Dugan mentioned that if i were the Type to die from a Bee sting for example then i might have a serious problem. The Only damage done was two tiny Black Fang Marks about one third of an Inch apart on my fingertip which along with moderate pain in the same place remained for about two weeks.
