If a child is born in Germany of a German Mother and an american father is the child a citizen of a Germany b the United states c both the answer could be any or All depend ing on when the child was born according to american consulate officials Here. A consulate official said that before Jan. 1, 1975, German Law stated that Only German fathers could pass on citizenship. This meant that children born in Ger Many to american servicemen married to German women were not German Citi Zens. They became american citizens at birth. But the Law changed in 1975, stating that children born in Germany of a German Parent Mother or father married to a non German were German citizens. To German mothers and american fathers actually became German citizens since this is handled by the German authorities. He did say that when someone is a Citi zen of two countries he must accept the responsibilities that go with this dual citizenship. For males this could mean an obligation to serve in two different armies. The draft system is no longer in effect in the ., but Young German males must serve their country for 15 months. Just be cause they might be american citizens in addition to being citizens of Germany would not exempt them from this Obliga Tion. Children born in Germany of an Ameri can and a German Parent since the new Law went into effect in 1975 Are both German and american citizens but not necessarily forever Gutierrez said.
