European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 20, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 18 the stars and stripes wednesday september 20, 1978 United nations at noon a South african Diplomat sat at a table with s it going i said to the South Afri can whom i did not rather slowly but history always does you know. Well get there however. The place will be a rather Large Algeria. Well show you some real Urban How far off i just time he said. It will happen of course. It is just As i say a matter of history moving at its own had with him a copy of a Johannesburg newspaper which he left on the table when hews summoned to a phone. I glanced through the paper. One Story was of particular inter est a Survey which showed that South Afri Ca s capital punishment rate is rising from 61hangings in 1976 to 90 in 1977 and up to 111 so far this year. The paper noted that the mos recently executed were Freddy of oking and pupa Gumedes. They were Hung in Pretoria Central prison. No notice beforehand was Given to the families of the two Reading the names of oking and pupa Gumedes i needed no assistance in determining their color. When the South african came Back. I handed him his paper and asked him Are Whites Ever Hung of. One every now and then. For sex Many one a year two a year of i should think a bit less than that he said. There was one political execution. A Man named John Harris was Hung in the Early 1960s. Something to do with a bombing i be Lieve. Otherwise coloureds and Blacks Are the people the hangings slow Down the revolt i a bit. Nor does it cause any quicken ing. There s no immediate retaliation by guerrillas. All a hanging does is provide some More cumulative weight to what is going to happen. It provides Long term assistance to pointed out the windows to Brooklyn which sat shrouded in smog on the other Side of the East River. I told the Man that in Brooklyn at this very hour there were easily do in political candidates running around the Street and calling for the death penalty to be reintroduced in new York. It has become the americanism Issue this year. People base entire campaigns on support for the death penalty. An obscure woman running against the speaker of the state Assembly Stanle Steingut. Was doing so Well that Steingut s Brooklyn organization had to go to a judge dear. And get the woman knocked off the ballot. An other woman Dolores Denman running for state attorney general an office in charge of civil matters for the state has decided to for get everything and scream out for a death penalty. If elected Shell have nothing to do with the criminal Justice system but facts provide no Man from South Africa found this amusing. I assume that the first Man they execute will be a White he , you d have to Start with a White to make it look Good i said. The first White they can find they la drag him right out won t they they la make the Warden Dye the Guy s hair Blond i they la get Down to business and run it straight on with the Blacks the Man looked ov6r at Brooklyn. I expect Well see some Man made smoke rising from there ," i said. Good. Perhaps someday Well compare our Urban violence he said. He picked up his newspaper and left. While i finished my cof fee i began to think about the time we had a problem with capital punishment in my own was Young 6 or 7, when my Uncle a lieu tenant of police named o Shaughnessy was killed in uniform in a barroom in Manhattan. He had stepped into the place during a Holdup and the two gunmen opened up on him. His widow Kitty o Shaughnessy known in my House As Kitty came to live with us. The two gunmen were caught and convicted and sentenced to death. As the months passed their various appeals were denied. Then one Day in my House everyone was around the Kitchen table drinking Beer and consoling Kitty. They had a helluva nerve my Uncle did t know what to say to them Kitty said. Listening i found out that the mothers of the two condemned gunmen had tried to visit great wine year is predicted Bordeaux France a you might wait a Little longer than usual but a 1978 Bor Deaux wine could be Worth it. Paul Globin president of the federation of Bordeaux wines predicts a High Quality grape in a Harvest that May be two or three weeks 1978 Vintage should be of Good Quality comparable to a 1966, officials said and Only slightly under the average in Quantity. Kitty and beg her to ask for clemency for their , they won t be Here anymore my other Uncle said. The police said they liar rest them if they come Shook her head. I Don t know what to do she said. I Don t want any More peo ple to die on account of this. It s bad enough that Bill s dead. Two dead bodies won t bring him poured her a Beer and told her to for get about it. After this through talk about the House i figured the executions were close. One Day when i came Home from school my Uncle was standing on the front porch with a cop. He and the cop each had a Beer. I sat on the broken front step and listened to them talk. A Western Union messenger came up and said he had a Telegram for Kitty o Shaughnessy. My Uncle signed for it opened it up read it and Are they kidding he said. I know How to take care of these he ripped the Telegram up and threw it Over the Side of the porch i can remember the Little yellow pieces of paper fluttering onto the dirt drive , in the Kitchen Over Beer somebody let it slip to Kitty that there had been this Telegram a big Long one from the mothers of the condemned men and that they said they were praying that Kitty would Cal the Gover nor s office and ask that the sentences be com say they re praying my Uncle said. Who Are they to be praying Kitty pushed away from the table and ran outside. I remember her stooped Over picking up the pieces of the Telegram from the dirt driveway. There weren t enough left for her to put the Telegram together. She came Back inthe House and began pacing around. Pacing and praying and talking to herself for hours. At 11 o clock that night the radio said that the two men had been executed. I was asleep when she fell apart that night. In the morning dressing for school i could Only hear voices talking nervously behind the closed door of the room she shared with my grandmother. When i came Home from school that Day Kitty was gone. Everybody said that it was just a temporary thing a nervous attack. She never returned to our House again. Years later i Learned that the woman never got Over that night. She spent years in a men Tal Hospital before dying. The electrocutions did not end cop killing. Always revenge is most empty Art.
