Up by Patricia Mccormack United press International Irma Hunt wants to give the presidents girls documented place in the history of the United girls As 18 years Hunt a native of Johnstown pa., has been going Over microfilm copies of documents in the Library of Congress the new York Public Library and other places gathering information about out of Wedlock loves of seven presidents from George washing ton to John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The documented gossip is Between the covers of Hunt s first Book Dearest Madame Mcgraw Hill. Most of the mistresses get no place in the history books Hunt said in an interview. The women in the history books Are wives mothers daughters of presidents. Or they Are women who did unusual things. Her report Complete with references 113 for chapter one about George Washington alleged affair with Sally Gary Fairfax is an attempt to give the mistresses their due. These women Are important because they left their Mark on various presidents if Only in the secret lines on his face in the blink of his eyes in his walk and in his attitude toward himself and toward the rest of the common thread running through the lives of the mistresses is they did t seem to gain in a material Way. Hunt a reporter for the last 20 years holds an . I English and american literature from new York University. A medical journalist she is on the staff of physicians radio network. She lives in new York but in the 1960s she was a washingtonian. The Book has its beginnings in Washington in the Early fall of 1960, when a Friend of mine an Early contrib Utor to John Kennedy s Campaign for the presidency escorted me to some of the splendid parties for those prescient people she said. She saw things never dreamed possible when she was growing up in Johnstown or attending the University of Pittsburgh for her Bachelor s festive evenings gave me a new View of Ameri can history Hunt said. Most presidents Are very Rich men either when they come into office or become that Way while in the Job. They Are powerful and have Access to All kinds of Beautiful women if they want them. Our presidents were human beings no matter How people deify them. Access to the Beautiful women is one of the Perks fringe benefits privileges of that High est office if a president wants Hunt said the Book is heavily documented but can bread without looking at the notes. The documentation is necessary because these fact scan be found Only by picking through the fragile layers of lace spun by generations of writers Many of whom we rewriting a president s life under the direction of his , the wife s View of the women in her presi Dent husband s life would tend to focus sharply until i included Only one other his sainted Mother. But As i have found this is not necessarily Hunt said some of the affairs show that a Man Slove for one woman need not diminish his love for the other woman in his life his wife for example. Others she maintains show that a married woman who Falls for a president can love him and her husband As have established that a Well kept secret about human behaviour until recently is that it is possible to be deeply in love with two persons at the same time. Loving two persons does not mean taking from on and giving to the other Hunt said. The seven women in the Book All loved by but never married to a president of the United states include Sally Fairfax wife of a wealthy virginian. She fell Inlove with her neighbor George Washington. Sally Hemings slave and half sister of mrs. Thomas Jefferson. \ Maria Halpin Grover Cleveland s Lover. Nan Britton was the extramarital woman in Warren Harding s life. Lucy Mercer for whom Franklin Delano Roosevelt was smitten. \ Kay Summersby Dwight Eisenhower s great affection. I Judith Exner whose trysts with John f. Kennedy Are detailed in the last Section of the Book. Included there also is a chapter on Jackie Kennedy during the White House years and one on Marilyn Monroe. Kennedy was totally open about his relation ships Hunt said. Do All presidents have affairs i it is hard to imagine some having affairs Hunt said. Harry Truman is my All time hero As a presi Dent by the Way. It is hard to imagine him Truman at the Start of his administration declared he was going to be the people s lobbyist and when he arrived Home in Independence to. ,3truman was asked by a reporter what was the first thing he carried the suitcases up to the attic the former president replied. J it s hard to imagine a Man like that having a affair Hunt repeated. Does it Hurt the office of the presidency to focus on these affairs now that they re so far in the past accepting our presidents As people might make ius better Able to forgive them for some of their transgressions when they finally get caught Hun said. Hunt thinks her Book opens a new humanizing Dimen Ision of history. These women Mirror the sexual mores of our coun try she said.
