around their Burkett and instructors for former Wimbledon Champion Stan Smith at sea Pines Hilton head is finished a we Klong tour of seven German clubs we Learned a lot after we got Over the initial Surprise of what kind of trip we would said chief of instruction for and a nationally known writer on Burkett and Mcgrat i expected a Lei surely tour of Germany with meetings involving travel tour directors and when we got Here we found out our agent had set up an exhibition said that was Clear when we walked into the first club on the they had about 300 people and across the net were two photo by Gus Schuettner sea Pines Tennis instructors Bill Mcgrath left and Don Burkett German clinic visitors More interested in seeing them play exhibitions that set the tone for the a seven club schedule which included stops in and around Frankfurt and the Germany tour followed a similar week in each time we finish our instruction on our German hosts say about the same Burkett they youve showed us what you do Best on the Tennis now lets go to the bar and Well show you what we do Burkett said German Beer filled out his Warmup suit More than he by the time they reached their last Ger Man Stop at near the two had refined their clinic knowing the fans expected less talking and More they also had two relatively inexperienced teenagers lined up on the other Side of the court As hitting eliminating any More confrontations with ranking whose 1979 Book peaking through Tennis has met with favourable criticism from Tennis writers and serious says he formed the ideas for his Book during work under noted instructors Vic Braden and Dennis Van Der plus his current stint As head Man for Smith at sea Pines his instruction is spiced with humor and he admires the Light hearted approach of Braden and feels that an easygoing along with technical analysis of just what is wrong and right with individual can help any player lift his or her at Weiter Stadt he was asked Why he stressed the thinking aspects of Tennis because this thing pointing to his head is where 90 percent of the game he whose parents live in echoed Burkett philos keep your mind Clear of everything but dont think about what you had for or what you did at the just Burkett said his background As a former University professor of social behaviour and College Tennis provided important experience for compilation of the Book which is a guide to Peak Burkett said that sea which holds Tennis clinics for approximately guests plans another instructor tour to Europe next but with better preparation for the strenuous playing in sore All he Well play some before we come next Casey at the Bat in Senate testimony by red Smith new York not a Young woman what was Casey Stengel like i thought she was pull ing my leg until i realized that she was nine years old when retiring As manager of the new York dropped out of Public Casey i was just i dug up my copy of cases testimony before the Senate subcommittee on antitrust and monopoly july it seems to me that those of us who covered Casey in his time owe it to history to reintroduce him to readers in this fashion at least once a Estes Kefauver you Are the Man Ager of the new York will you give us briefly your background and views about this legislation Stengel i started in professional Ball in have been in professional i would for 48 i have been employed by numerous Ball clubs in the majors and in the minor i entered in the minor leagues with Kansas i played As Low As class d which was at and also class c Ball and class a and i have advanced in baseball As a i had Many years that i was not so successful As a As it game of and then i was no doubt discharged by baseball in which i had to go Back to the minor leagues As a and after being in the minor leagues As a i became a major league manager in several cities and was we Call it discharged because there is no question i had to and i returned to the minor leagues at Kansas City and and then returned to the major in the last 10 with the new York the new York Yankees have had tremendous and while i am not a ballplayer who does the i have no doubt worked for a bal club that is very capable in the i have been up and Down the i know there Are some things in baseball 35 to 50 years ago that Are better now than they were in those in those my you could not Transfer a bal club in the minor class class c class a How could you Transfer a bal club when you did not have a Highway How could you Transfer a bal club when the railroads then would take you to a you got off and then you had to wait and sit up five hours to go to another bal club How could you run baseball then without night Ball you had to have night Ball to improve the to pay larger and i went to the first year i received a i thought that was i had to put away enough Money to go to dental i found out it was not better in any other questions you would like to ask me Kefauver Are you prepared to answer particularly Why baseball wants this Bill passed Stengel i would have to say at the present i think that baseball has advanced in this respect for the player that is an amazing statement for me to because you can retire with an annuity at and what organization in America allows you to retire at 50 and receive Money now the second thing about baseball that i think is commentary very interesting to the or to All of is that it is the owners fault if he does not improve his along with the officials in the bal club and the now what causes that if i am going to go on the Road and we Are a travelling Ball club and you know the Cost of transportation now we travel sometimes with three Pullman the new York and in just a salaried Man and do not own Stock in the new York i found out that in travelling with the new York Yankees on the Road and that it is the and we have broken records in Washington this we have broken them in every City but new and we have lost two clubs that have gone out of the City of new of we have had some bad i would say that they Are mad at us in we fill the they have come out to see Good i will say they Are mad at us in Kansas but we broke their Atten dance now on the Road we Only get possibly 27 i am not positive of these As i am not an if you go Back 15 years or if i owned Stock in the i would give them to Kefauver i am not sure that i made my question Stengel that is All i am not sure in going to answer yours Joseph Omahoney How Many minor leagues were there in baseball when you began Stengel there were not so Many at that time because of this fact anybody to go into baseball at that time with the educational schools that we had were while you were probably thoroughly educated at you had to be we had Only Small cities that you could put a team in and they would go i remember the first year i was at and a Bank offered me if i would let them have a Little i left there and took a uniform because they owed me two weeks but i either had to but i did not have enough Money to go to dental College so i had to go with the manager Down to John Carroll the question senator Kefauver asked was in your honest with your 48 years of is the need for this legislation in View of the fact that baseball has not been subject to antitrust Stengel Carroll i had a conference with one of the attorneys representing not Only baseball but All of the and i listened to your explanation to senator it seemed to me it had some i asked the attorney this question what was the need for this legislation i wonder if you would accept his he said they didst want to be subjected to the apse Dixit of the Federal government because they would throw a lot of damage suits on the and Namnum he in the first the Toolson Case was Sui it was de Minimus non Carat Stengel you Are going to get me there for about two Kefauver thank very we appreciate your presence Mickey will you come around do you have any observations with refer ence to the applicability of the antitrust Laws to baseball Mantle my views Are just about the same As Ca
