Denktash 61, had sought a fresh mandate from the electorate before attempting new negotiations with the greek cypriots to reunite the strategic Mediterranean Island. A year later turkish cypriots set up their own administration an Independent entity in All but name with an elected president and parliament and Independent courts. The declaration of full Independence in 1983 led to High level negotiations Between cypriot president Spyros Kyprianou and Denktash.  talks in new York in january failed when Kyprianou rejected a draft agreement accepted by the turkish Side. In the South Kyprianou has come under criticism from opposition parties which hold a Large majority in the parliament for allegedly mishandling the january talks. The Island has a presidential system and losing support in the legislature does not affect Kyprianou s status. Denktash was born in 1924 to a prosperous turkish cypriot family in Paphos on Cyprus Southwest coast now in the greek zone. His father was a judge and Denktash studied Law in England and became a barrister in 1947. He served As a Public prosecutor under British colonial Rule from 1949 to 1958. After the breakout of inter communal fighting on the Island in 1963-64, Denktash was barred from re entry to Cyprus after a trip to Turkey. Allowed Back in 1968, Denktash represented the turkish Side in inter communal peace talks which lasted six years without any results. He was the unopposed Leader of the turkish Community when turks invaded Cyprus and occupied a zone with 37 percent of the Island s territory. He is married and has two daughters and two sons.
