A time was running out Roger Mallic said when his Birdie put found the cup on the fourth Hole of a sudden death playoff. I figured i had to do it there Maltbie said after he Defeated George Burns and Ray Floyd for the title in the $500,000 manufacturers Hanover Westchester Clas sic sunday. I figured if i Don t do it there i Don t do it. You Only get so Many chances out Here before somebody slams the door in your face Maltbie said. When his 8-Footcr found the cup the door was slammed on Burns and Floyd. Maltbie after nine years of non winning frustration was a Winner again. What a Relief it is to have won he said. I be been playing better Golf for a period of time. But the Only thing that makes the time i be put in and the work i be done worthwhile is a Victory. I had my opportunities and let them go. In the playoff 1 had a couple of opportunities and let them go. But this time lady Luck smiled on me. I m extremely grateful and thankful the Way events turned out he said. But it did t come easily. Maltbie appeared out of it when he fell two shots Back with two holes to play in regulation. He had to put on a Birdie Birdie finish to gain a place in the playoff then missed three potential Birdie putts before he finally nailed it Down. It was the fourth Victory of Maltbie s career. It broke a non winning string that had lasted since his playoff Triumph in the 1976 memorial tournament. Maltbie Burns and the 42-year-old Floyd finished the regulation 72 holes in 275, nine shots under Par on the Hilly West Chester country club course in suburban new York. Maltbie and Burns who shared the third round Lead each had a closing 70. Floyd a Winner in Houston earlier this year provided most of the Early drama with a closing 65, a 6-under-Par Effort that came despite the Handicap of a hooking Driver. All three made routine 2-putt pars on the first two holes of the playoff. On the third Burns and Floyd both drove into the rough. Burns hit a tree with his second and was Well Short of the Green. Floyd found a Bunker. Each however made a great save Burns pitching to about one foot and Floyd com ing out of the Sand to about 3 /2 feet. Malt Bie had a Chance to win it there but missed an 8 to 10-foot putt. He chewed his Mous tache a bit and when Floyd and Burns saved Par went on to the next Hole the Par 3 16th. Floyd and Burns each missed the Green. Maltbie with a nine year non winning Streak hanging Over his head put his about 6 to 8 feet from the cup. Floyd chipped Long and missed an 18 foot Par putt. Mark Wiebe came on with a 67 and was fourth alone at 277, two shots out of the playoff. He was followed by Willie Wood 70-279, and Peter Jacobsen 69-280. None however really got in the title Chase.
