European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 20, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 16 the stars and stripes Friday september 20, 1985 consumer watch the american diet too fast too fat by Mary Neth consumer editor a americans have the worst eating habits inthe world says Sarah Kelleher registered dietitian and nutritionist at headquarter Susareu in is too much last food and too Little attention to nutrition. The result out of shape. Obese men and women and poor health. Kelleher whose Job involves military nutrition education believes the fitness rage in the United slates is on the right track but if it really is to be successful a lot of bad habits need to be undone. A recent study by the Gallup organization would seem to Bear her out. In a Telephone poll for the National restaurant association it was discovered that people All Over the country Are purchasing More ready made dishes having food Home delivered and grazing instead of eating three Square meals a Day. As More women go to work they Are cooking less. For example More than 70 million americans pizza delivered in the first three months of 1985, the increase in grazing was evident in the number of people who drop into ice Cream shops 32 percent of the Survey respondents and Iresh baked cookie shops 29 percent. While much of the world is worried about having enough food for their people millions of americans suffer from overeating says Kelleher. Even though americans seem to be constantly on a diet instead of shrinking their size is growing year by year Pound by Pound. The typical adult american male is now 20 to 30 pounds overweight the typical female 15 to 30 pounds and to percent of elementary schoolchildren and 20 to 30 percent of High schooners Are today according to Kelleher dietitians Are taking a new approach. People who wont to them dietitians in the past remember having their hands slapped for eating now. According to Kelleher. Dietitians Are preaching moderation not denial. They Are concentrating on trying to change America s Overall eating habits. This includes eating regularly not skipping meals and increasing exercise biking running wandering things like in this line the department of defense is pushing a military wide nutrition and fitness program says Kelleher. She notes for example that very specific standards have been set Lor dining facilities. Menus must be planned around the Basic four food groups fruits and vegetables cereals breads and grains meats poultry eggs and fish milk cheese and Yogurt. A salad bar will be available whenever possible at lunch and dinner excessive Tat will be trimmed from meat and a non Fried entree will be offered As an alternative when a Fried one is featured. Cocked vegetables will be served without Margarine butter sauces or gravies. Low calorie dressings will be offered along with sugar substitutes and a herbal seasoning mixture in lieu of Salt for table use. Kelleher also notes that personnel Are being trained in cooking methods away from too Many Fried foods and in giving dietary the military s interest in nutrition is easy to understand. As Kelleher Points out Good nutrition not Only prolongs life but with improved diets people Are going to look better feel better and perform their jobs better new ideas have come out about weight control in recent says Kelleher. Previously if people were not losing weight we encouraged them to Cut Way Down on what they ate. Now we Are finding that this slows the metabolic rate. They might lose weight initially but when they go Back to their Normal pattern of eating they balloon. Say someone is used to eating 2,000 calories a Day and wants to lose 10 pounds. By sticking with a 800 calorie a Day diet for a month or so the 10 pounds Are lost. The metabolic rate however also is Cut Down and when the person again begins eating 2,000 calories a Day weight is picked up faster than Ever. We Are trying to encourage a moderate intake of calories not Low calorie or no calorie diets and pushing exercise. Exercise increases metabolic Kelleher would like to stress that people should go to dietitians for advice whether it is for losing weight or learning How to eat properly. In the military Community where medical care is free of charge there is no reason for not consulting a registered Kathleen Reily h.d., clinical dietitian at St general Hospital in bad Cannstatt gives the following general dieting advice. The most sensible Way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat a Little less. Eat one slice of roast beef instead of two. One less Beer. One less Pat of butter one less Rich dessert. Avoid crash diets that Are severely restricted in the variety of foods they allow. Crash diets do not work for Long because most people can t stay on them they Are not a realistic Way to eat for the rest of your life very often the Only weight that is lost is water not fat some crash diets can even be dangerous. Many of us should reduce our fat intake. Fats and oils have More than twice As Many calories per ounce As protein or carbohydrates. It s not the Spaghetti that adds so Many calories but the Oil in the noodles and in the sauce. It is not the hamburger but the Mayonnaise or special sauce it s not the Toast but the butter sugar and sweets generally Are very High in calories and Low in nutrients. Eating less of these folds will help promote weight Reily also advises a gradual increase of everyday phys Cal activities like walking or climbing stairs if you need to lose weight do so gradually. A steady loss of one to two pounds a week is Sale and More to be maintained than a weight loss of More ortpllrvn0npounds " Law T us
