Elliott Field is the Fine football Field and track Complex behind Wiesbaden High school. It was named in Honor of Jim Elliott the former coach who won seven football lilies and 12 of his 16 Dodds track and Field championships in his 20 years a Wiesbaden. And Jim Elliott was there to Cut the Blue and Gold ribbon that stretched Between the goal posts on the North end of the Field. He flew in at the invitation of Tom Leblanc Dodds Germany athletic coordinator As a guest of his former coaching fraternity. The invitation came quite late so Jim paid his own Way from Lubbock Texas to Wiesbaden. However la Blanc said saturday before the dedication ceremonies that the coaches had wanted to give Jim something special and it was decided that buying the plane ticket would be an appropriate Way to express their feelings for their former Dodds compatriot. During his coaching Days at Wiesbaden. Jim earned the admiration and respect of All the people in Dodds coaches administrators officials and certainly the players he coached Leblanc said. Last week when All the work on the naming of Elliott Field program was caring completion. I thought that it would be great if the Man who had done so much for Wiesbaden High school and so much for the Dodds program could be at the dedication. I called Jim and invited him to come Over for it. He bought his own ticket but i contacted some coaches and thought they would like to do something for an old Friend. Someone mentioned that maybe we could take care of his ticket. The idea was greeted with enthusiasm and i have received checks from Many of Jim s friends Leblanc said. If any one else wants to contribute they can get in touch with Elliott who Seldom minced words when he was coaching and a few times Over the years Drew the Wrath of Dodds administrators for expressing his views Drew laughter from the More than 2,500 people who witnessed Wiesbaden s Victory Over Mannheim in the dedication game. If there had been As much warmth towards me when i was coaching As there is Here today i never would have left he quipped. Seriously this is the greatest Day of my life. I always heard that people get things dedicated to them after they re dead. The Only thing that would make the Day better would be for the warriors to win their first game at Elliott they did beating Mannheim 21-6 and then they presented Jim with the game Ball. He was beam ing with Pride and happiness. And Well he should. The facilities at the new Elliott Field Are super and the credit goes to boosters club president Rick Fields and All his helpers. Personal Appeal to players on drug testing Ueberroth eyes open door relationship by Hal Bock a sports writer the Pittsburgh drug trial and the devastating testimony it has produced has base Ball struggling through the sport s worst embarrassment once the Black sox scandal so when commissioner Peter Ueber Roth decided tuesday to address the Issue it was entirely appropriate that he chose to quote Kennesaw Mountain land the first commissioner and the Man who helped Dean up the original mess. I d like to share with you two lines from Landis in 1921," Ueberroth 1 want every player to feel i stand behind him that i am his Friend and am Ever ready to protect him so Long As he on the Square. That describes Ueberroth s position today. He wants to create an open door com missioner ship dealing with the players directly. His first attempt was the personal letter he sent to every major leaguer asking that they accept voluntary drug testing. He did not use the traditional contract route. He did not suggest negotiations on commentary the mutter with the Union. Instead he chose to make it a from me to you a peal sort of like hands across the sea. This is not a matter for the player relations committee or the players association he said. This is a personal matter Between the commissioner and the that of course is not exactly the Way the players association views this delicate Issue. The Union has a negotiated drug program and a contract that says if you want some thing from the players you Deal with us. Was Ueberroth trying an end run that s your opinion he said. I Don t want to get into a confrontation. I Don t know what to expect from the players association. I Hope they understand it s a simple offering from the commissioner to join a program each player on an individual basis. I veal ready had some unsolicited requests from players to be pan of a program Ueberroth s action was reminiscent of the fireside chats president Franklin d. Roosevelt used when he needed popular support for his programs. It s the same thing president Reagan docs with direct Appeal to the people when Congress gets Balky with him. Those presidents have been great communicators. So is this com missioner. Ueberroth knows the Pittsburgh mess threatens to undermine the Public s Confidence in the game. He has seen the re action of people the pregnant pause after he is introduced As the commissioner of baseball hat silently Speaks volumes. He knows that every time a player kicks a Ballor strikes out in the clutch the suspicion will surface. He figures testing is the Only Way to defuse the Issue. This program will remove doubt and suspicion he said. Baseball will be Given a clean Bill of health. The agony will be before testing " there arc some obvious problems with Ueberroth s proposal. It could drive a deep wedge into clubhouses if some players agree to submit to tests and others choose not to. There was no indication that the commissioner is prepared to Deal with that contingency. Instead the implication a that baseball will be ready with the testing bottle for any player who is willing to participate and that it might be better to accept this program than to Wail for some outside Agency like the . Government to impose one. Anybody who wants to Volunteer can do it the commissioner said. It s a Deci Sion they make for themselves. It s their game their interestingly Ueberroth admitted that he was sympathetic to the argument that testing could be a human rights Issue. As As individual. 1 come Down on the Liberal Side in respect to individual he said. But there comes a time he s right there. And clearly that time has come for baseball.
