Under a recent government decree the museum its 9,000 works of Art collected mainly by Spanish Royalty become Independent of the National museums Board under which they languished toward the end of the 40-year regime of Gen. Francisco Franco. Only one third of the museum s collection can presently be displayed at a Given time. Administrative Independence will give us the Means to take care of the immediate needs of the museum give it a major Facelift director Alfonso Sanchez Perez said. A 1968 decision by the Franco government to unify All state museums under one Board treated the Prado As just one More museum said a Prado official who spoke on condition of anonymity. They mixed the Prado with the rest of the museums combining its budget with the general museum budget thinking they were doing something constructive he said. It obviously did t work because even minor changes at the Prado had to pass through a Maze of bureaucratic channels before being implemented the museum which opened in 1819, fell into general disrepair the official said. Grime covered most of the paintings which were neither displayed nor stored in a climate controlled environment. Lighting in the exhibit rooms was insufficient distracting. Plans to train enlarge the staff of 385, make acquisitions update the museum s catalogue plan expansions were never implemented he said. A july 31 decree returns administrative Independence to the Board of directors of the Prado enabling them to buy the Villahermosa Palace near the museum doubling exhibition storage space. Six restoration research departments have also been created. Sanchez Perez said the Prado would install its collection of 150 paintings 480 drawings by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes in the newly acquired Villahermosa Palace Annex scheduled o open a 1987. It is also hoped that with its own in new und autonomy the Prado will be Able to stay open beyond 2 on sundays the Only Day most spaniards have to get to know their Art treasures
