European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - October 7, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday. October 7, 1985 the stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Lander j letters Don t know How Many dear Ann Landers for Many years you have urged peo ple to get therapy at their local mental health centers where there arc sliding scale fees. As some one who has chosen Public mental health As a career i could t agree with you More. Unfortunately in our Community and More communities around the country the Public mental health clinic is now seen As a Revenue Raiser for inc local government. Con sequently the fees have gone up. For example a single Mother of one child making $1 1,000 a year would pay $10 for a visit. If we want to ice her and her child separately once a week it would Cost her Al least $80 per month. As a result Many families cannot afford our services and Don t come Back after the first visit. As an employee i would catch hell for going to the press with this but As a citizen i can ask you to urge people to overcome their feeling of shame when they need psychotherapy and cannot afford it. Please Tell them to Contact an elected or appointed official in their town or county who has a say about whether the health Center should be a source of Revenue for the government. They should insist that it provide affordable therapy for citizens who need it. If enough people complained the policy would change and the clinics would once again be accessible to everyone. Do you agree with me Ann a therapist in Washington . Dear . My bet i do. Thanks for the inside tip. I Urf to my readers to follow through. Dear Ann Landers this is no big Deal unless a person has newspaper route that involves Coin oper ated dispensers. The problem is theft an you would not believe How much of it there n around. I am talking about people who put Money in the rack for one paper and take two three or four. I la bet people think they arc ripping off the Rich newspaper publisher. They re wrong. We have to pay for All the papers we Don t return. Some Days i lose As Many As 100. This can really Hurt a Little Guy who is trying to make a living. Noticed however that Only women were interviewed. I would be interested in hear ing from the male highter up on the subject. Also since this is my second tour in Europe i am a female no. I May have some insight As to the female role if War Breaks out. First there is no Neo non combatant evacuation order for female sol Diers in Europe. Hut should Tell someone that we Are staying and that there is a Strong possibility Well fight defensively at least in wartime. Second since females perform guard duty alongside their male counterparts an guard duty is a defensive posture i would say although it is minimal females arc trained to tight. 1 personally would defend my area of operation if the situation arose. After Allisn t that what we re All Here for the females in the army who believe they Are not going to be involved in the fight will have a rude Awakening. Perhaps More articles like that one should be printed As a kind of psychological preparation for not Only the service members but their families and friends As Well.
