European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 21, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 4 the stars and stripes monday october 21, 1985 Earth ring formed Moon theory says Washington up the Moon is made not of material that broke from the Earth in one piece but from a ring spun off from Earth when the planet was Young and fast an Indiana University astronomer said in a report o be issued monday. In his new explanation of How the Moon was formed Richard h. Durison an astronomy professor at the univer sity used a supercomputer to simulate the Earth when it was fluid and rotating rapidly. He found the result was a single body surrounded by a ring of material. The National science foundation which supported the work said the theory the Moon was a spinoff of Earth was proposed first by George Darwin son of the English naturalist in 1879. One problem with the theory was that the Moon docs not have enough angular momentum in its orbit to have been formed in one piece the foundation said. Under the theory the missing Momen Tum would have been in the rest of the ring which vanished. The new theory could also explain Why the Moon has so Little Iron while the Earth has so much. The Iron would have settled to the Earth s con where it lies now. And the outer part could have broken away to form the ring. The new theory has been circulating in the astronomical Community Durison said so his work is More of a progression of what we be been learning rather than being anything that s going to startle most astronomers believe the Earth Early in its existence was struck by a planet the size of Mars and the Impact broke off material from both bodies that later formed the Moon he said. He said that theory is compatible with his own. A Mars sized body might knee stimulated the reaction that produced the ring. Durison said he plans to explore other conditions in simulation to see if they would support the one piece theory or produce any others. The work done in collaboration with scientists at Louisiana stale University. Mount Stremlo and siding Spring observatories in Australia and the Carne Gie institution in Washington will be submitted for publication in the Astro physical journal. Report Cas for tightening of Airport Security Washington up Security measures at the nation s airports have detected tens of thousands of firearms and May have averted More than 100 Hijack Ings but still need to be strengthened a congressional report says. The report released sunday urges More extensive background checks of the people who staff Security posts at the airports and More research and development on new technology to detect weapons and explosives. Since 1973, the Faa s program for screening passengers and their carry on baggage has detected More than 30,000 firearms and resulted in the arrest of nearly 13,000 people. An estimated 78.4 billion pieces of carry on baggage have been screened since 1973, the report noted. Faa officials estimate the screening May have averted some 112 hijackings the re port by the House committee on govern ment operations says. But the report says recent events including the hijacking of a Twa flight from Athens to Rome in june the mysterious crash of an air India plane and the Narita Airport bombing in Japan show the need for even greater efforts. Despite inc Success of the Security pro Gram to Date the recent attacks against commercial aviation illustrate the need to continuously Monitor and update Security procedures and policies the report says. Rep. Vardiss Collins d-iii., chairwoman of the government activities and transportation subcommittee commended the Faa for its results to Date but said More needs to be done especially in the development of devices to detect explosives in checked bag the committee report based on hearings held earlier this year recommends that in creased attention be paid to inc employees of private Security firms responsible for screening passengers and baggage at air ports. To combat the tedious nature of pc flight screening and to motivate Low wage employees consideration should be Given to incentive compensation for the detection and discovery of firearms knives and explosive devices the report says. The report notes Faa plans to increase the number of armed marshals assigned to travel on passenger planes a program opposed by the air line pilots association. The major objection to the presence of sky marshals is the fear than an armed confrontation could occur in a pressurized aircraft Cabin with catastrophic consequences. A single round could puncture an aircraft s fuselage and seriously impair the ability of the flight Crew to safely control the aircraft the report says. Bits of wreckage Otter new clues bomb May have caused air India crash paper says new York up pieces of newly recovered wreckage from the air India plane that crashed into the Atlantic last summer indicate that a bomb May have exploded aboard it the new York times reported saturday. The wreckage recovered from the floor of the Ocean 120 Miles off the coast of ire land provides the first hard evidence that the Boeing 747 was destroyed by a bomb. The wreckage is under 6,700 feet of water. That theory has been Given great plausibility because a bomb went off in a Ca Nadian Pacific air jetliner the same Day and because the air India Craft s Crew gave no radio warning of impending doom before the jumbo Jet suddenly disappeared from radar screens. All 329 people aboard the Mon local to London flight were killed in the june 23crash. Gasoline prices jump across . Los Angeles up wholesale gasoline prices surged slightly across the nation last week after an Overall drop of More than 5 cents a gallon since the end of june Oil Industry analyst Dan Lundburg said saturday. Lundburg whose weekly Lundburg let Ter surveys 10,000 gasoline stations nation wide said the unusual wholesale Price in crease was due to a higher demand Low inventories lower gasoline import Levels and higher costs of making gasoline. Typically fall brings lower gasoline prices and until recently 198s seemed no exception Lundburg said. Wholesale gasoline prices dropped Over 5 cents a gallon Between their late june Peak and mid october but Are rebounding nationwide going in 1.6 cents a gallon in inc two weeks ending oct. 18 for unbranded regular average wholesale Price he said the nationwide Overall aver age wholesale Price of gasoline last week was 8s.41 cents compared with an Overall average retail Price of 120.25 cents. The increase in wholesale prices could soon push up retail prices which fell 3.78 cents a gallon during the summer and Early autumn he said. Lundburg said the unusual Price turn around this season is due to four factors a 3.7 percent increase in gasoline de Mand compared with demand in the fall of 1984, a 20 percent drop in finished Asoline imports Over autumn 1984, re Ucci buying coupled with lower inventories because of uncertainty Over world crude prices and rules that have forced gasoline makers to use a More Coll octane.
