European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 28, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 6 the stars and stripes monday october 28, 1985 20 years later Gateway Arch still symbolizes spirit of St. Louis St. Louis. To. I i the Gateway Arch 43,226 tons of steel and Concrete formed to create the United slates tallest Monument will be 20 years old monday with Only a bit of Graffiti to show its age. Millions of people gae at the 630-fool Arch each year and More than 900.0 10 of them take the four minute ride to the top in one of the two 80-passenger trams. A few vandals have gouged the Monument with knives but they have done Lille to Del acl from the enduring Beauty of the Arch which forms a catenary curve nearly 100 feel taller than the Washington Monument. We can Sand off the Graffiti but you re wearing away the fabric of the Arch itself said Jerry Schober superintendent of the Arch grounds. He said research is under Way to discover a less damaging Way to remove the scratches. The gleaming stainless steel Structure designed by architect hero , who died shortly before construction began is the Centrepiece of the 100-Ncrc Jefferson National expansion memorial. The Arch the grounds tree lined walkways and reflect ing pools arc on the site of the original Village of St. Louis on the West Bank of the Mississippi River. Lewis and Clark left the Frontier outpost in 1803 to explore the vast Louisiana Purchase which was acquired by president Jef Ferson. The Arch s simple and elegant form embodies remarkable achievements in engineering and construction. Engineers designed the Arch to withstand winds of 150 Mph. A stiff Breeze causes it to Sway Only a few inches at the top. Saarinen is credited with the idea of an Arch to Symbol ize St. Louis As the Gateway to the West. But it was John Dinkeloo As chief Engineer who made sure the Arch would be by Complex stresses. Dinkeloo devised a Way to Anchor each leg of the Arch in foundations made of 25,980 tons of Concrete 44 feet thick. An Arch without Interior support would have twisted in the wind and soon snapped Arch is constructed in sections with inner and outer frames of steel known to the construction workers As up to the 300 foot level the space Between the frames is filled with Concrete. Elcel rods running through the Concrete some reaching deep into the foundation arc pulled taut with 71 ions of pull giving the Arch incredible strength. As a result the Arch was allowed to taper even More than envisioned by Saarinen making it appear to be taller than it is wide. Actually the distances Are equal. The legs Are equilateral triangles 54 feet at the base and 17 feet at the top. The Arch poked above ground feb. 12, 1963, when the first of the 142 steel sections was set. By August 1963, the slur Ciurca became High enough to use creeper cranes attached to the Back of each leg. The specially designed construction cranes built their own tracks As they inched upward. By july 4, 1965, the legs were 530 feet High and leaning inward far enough to require a stabilizing strut. And on oct. 28, 1965, with vice president Hubert Humphrey watching from a helicopter High above the Mississippi the final Section was put in place. The Sun that Day had caused the South leg to expand 5 inches so fire hoses were used to pour water on the leg to make it shrink to match the North leg. The Keystone was set the jacks were released and Saarinen s dream was Complete. The Arch remains the tallest Structure in downtown St. Louis. There Are building height restrictions along the riverfront to protect vistas of the Monument. But developers of office towers away from the restricted area have voluntarily limited building Heights to Aboul 600 feel. The Arch Cost about $18.2 million including the Grams barely enough now to construct a medium sized office building. To commemorate the 20th anniversary the National Park service is offering free rides to the to p of the Arch. A reunion of cons Duclion workers also is planned. The Arch has not had Universal acclaim although it was the unanimous Choice of the design Competition committee in 1947. Some have said the Arch looks Lukca giant hairpin or a croquet wicket. And Al least two air planes and a helicopter Over the years have violated the Federal Rule against flying Between the legs. Steelworkers ratify new contract Wheeling .
