The Kittany Lions became the fourth no. Team this season by capturing 34 of 42 first place votes and 600 Points. It was the first time Penn state was named no. 1  in National championship season in 1982. Saturday s 16-12 Victory Over Boston College kept Penn state undefeated and marked the seventh time this season it has won by less than seven Points. That fact probably prevented the Kittany Lions from becoming a unanimous top Choice and kept them off one coach s ballot entirely. Iowa a unanimous Choice the past two weeks and no. 1 the last five Sank to no. 6 after a 22-13 loss to Ohio state Auburn and Oklahoma were the other no. 1 teams this year. Florida a 14-10 Winner Over Auburn raised its record to 7-0-1. The gators placed on Mcaa probation for three years for 59 rules violations arc ineligible for the up top 20. Southern methodist also on probation is the other ineligible team. Nebraska 5 first place votes and 570 Points moved up one spot to no. 2 while Ohio slate 1 and 505 jumped from seventh to no. 3. No. 15 Georgia Rose two notches. No. 16 Florida stat dropped from ninth while Tennis Lee advanced one spot to no. 17. Brigham Young fell from 16th to no. 18 while Texas am and Alabama remained 19th and 20th. There were no new teams in the top 20 with Nebraska and air Force the Only schools on All 42 ballots. Five Southeastern conference teams made the ratings. The St. Louis comeback from a 10-0 halftime deficit dropped Dallas 6-3, into a first place tie with the new York giants in the pfc East. The cards meanwhile improved their record to 4-5. While St. Louis staggered against the rugged Cowboy defense Dallas built a 10-0 halftime advantage on Danny White s 8 Yard pass to Drew Hill and a 19-Yard Field goal by Rafael Septien. St. Louis caught tire on its first posses Sion after halftime with Lomax s 10-Yard ass to Doug Marsh lighting the fuse on an 1 Yard drive. Lomax followed with a 13 yarder to Tilley and the cards picked up an additional 15 Yards on a roughing penalty. Lomax then connected with Tilley on the Long touchdown play to Cut the Dallas advantage to 10-7 with 12 05 remaining in the third Quarter. Television replays of the play appeared to show that Tilley spiked the Ball before Actu ally reaching the cad zone but the play was ruled a touchdown. The cardinals moved 65 Yards on their nut Possession for the go ahead touchdown. Cards a a Neil Lomax.
