But they Don t position is that in other people want to runaround constantly searching and shopping let them. They know better. When they see some thing they like they not Only grab it they grab them. They Are the men and women who buy in Quantity when they find a style they like. Why it s primarily a matter of love a dress a sweater a shirt a tie or a pair of shoes that looks Good eels comfortable and can go on almost forever. They know that if they Don t Stock up chances Are when they go to replace it. It will be out of Stock or superseded by something new. There Are other reasons. Some of the people who buy in multiples do it to save time some have several Homes and like almost identical wardrobes in All of them some hate shopping some hate change. But All Are convinced that their method of shopping is the Only logical one you re talking to miss multiple " said photographer Jill Krementz who is married to writer Kurt Vonnegut. When it s comfortable and it suits me Why not she said. Ii saves a lot of Krementz s working uniform is Loose coveralls. Which she wears with a Blouse and tie shoes. The coveralls Are made by Laura Ashley and she has 14 pairs in the same style in different colors and varying fabrics from Corduroy and Cotton to Chintz. The five blouses she wears with them Are identical As Aro her our pairs of working shoes. Other duplicates in her wardrobe include a Norma Kamali Turtleneck dress in White Green Olive and Black. Bras Are ordered by the dozen frequently several of them in the same color because they keep changing the styles and her Purchase of shirts follows the same pattern. It s a feeling you have about something that makes you feel she said. If i find a sweater that is cozy and Nice to Wear i la get it in several colors anyone who thinks that buying in multiples is frivolous is dead wrong according to Kasper the designer. It has nothing to do with affluence he said although it obviously requires an initial investment that is not pos sible for everyone. Basically people who buy several things in the same style spend Money More carefully he said. And in my own Case there s another thing i Don t shop a the result is that when Kasper does replenish his wardrobe he s Apt to buy Many lies and pairs of socks and several shirts and sweaters identical in everything other than color. I like certain basics that work with he said. For example i love knitted gloves which i used to get at harrods in London then they stopped carry ing them. When i found something similar. I bought several pair immediately. I think it s a More intelligent Way to Norman Lear the television producer responsible Lor such programs As All in the family and Maude con fessed that he too occasionally succumbs 1o buying More than one of something he likes. It s not a Way of living with me but i sometimes do it if i like something or to simplify life he said. I bought a sweater i liked in a number of different colors and i love it now i m sorry i did t buy the one multiple Purchase that is a Way of life Lear said is shoes some hate shopping some hate change people who buying multiples buying in multiple it primarily a matter Orlov. That s because i Wear Only one he said. I do it but it makes me sound so said Arnold Jurdem when asked if he Ever bought More than one of something. I m a creature of habit i Don t like change. I m the Type who likes the same restaurant and can go Back to it three times a week even with travelling i could go to London Paris Rome and nowhere Jurdem said his Wile Anne is quite different and therefore he cannot always indulge his passion for sameness. But when it comes to his wardrobe his conservatism prevails. I like striped he said. I buy the same style in All kinds of colors. I like pin striped suits. I buy the same style in Blue Black and Gray. I be worn the same style of shoes for 10 years. I get them in Brown and Black and the Only time i Ever change is to buy Mocca sins in the As for socks Jurdem a Public relations executive said he bought them a dozen at a time Argyle for Day Wear and Black silk for evening. The Jurdes spend a Good part of the summer sea son on Long Island where a Blazer is the evening uni form for men. Many of the men enliven their wardrobes with blazers of varying colors and style. Not Jurdem. I buy two blazers at a time same color Navy and same he said firmly. A director of Andre Oliver the men s store Danny Zarem is constantly dealing in a wide spectrum of color which is perhaps Why when he buys in multiples As he often does. It is multiples in the most subdued shades available. Ii i see something classic in colors like Black and Silver Gray i la get two or three he said. I do the same Ihms with solid color ties. And when i see a shoe i like i la gel it in Brown and Black leather and Brown Jewell Jackson Mccabe walks out of a store with four or five blouses in the same style because she tends to Wear dramatic clothes and prefers simple accessories. There was one Blouse i particularly loved because it draped so beautifully she said. I bought it in every color they had then i went out and Lound a seam stress to copy Mccabe who is president of the coalition of 100 Black women said she had a High heeled classic Charles Jourdan pump in red. Beige White Burgundy Black Patent and Black kid. I would t buy More than two handbags or night gowns of the same style but i buy panty Hose by the dozen she said. Mccabe said she draws the line Al buying dresses in the same style that would be carrying things Loo far. Then she paused Well come to think of it that s not she said. I be done in several times. One i remember very Well was a fabulous Cashmere shirtwaist. I said to Mysell i be got to have this in More than one color and i bought it in Black and Mccabe said that aside from her preference for Clas sic styles there were other reasons for her frequent armload purchases. Part of it also is that i travel so much and Don t really have a lot of Lime to she said. And then i come by the practice naturally.
