The Only Issue before wrapping up football is the naming of the 1985 stars and stripes All Europe team with its offensive and defensive players and coach of the year selections. Deadline for nominations come and passed and i be begun the challenging chore of determining the elite Field. The team will be announced next week. Although every Dodds coach uses at least four two Way players and several of them went to great pains to describe those talents in their All Europe recommendations the All conference teams which ran last week did t reflect that format. Germany aaa coaches did t name any the Only one to make it from both ways in Germany a was Danny Moler of Mannheim who was named As kicker and punter Augsburg s Brian Taylor a a he was the Only a Gold selectee Vilseck s Tom Buckley re he was the Only a Silver Choice leaving Gissen s Chris Beasley off the a Silver defense is incomprehensible and the Bennor opted for a one team format. Only three teams competed in Italy and those coaches naturally went with the two team format. So will the stars and stripes deserving two Way performers will be duly recognized. Spain Cross country and wrestling and Italy gymnastics began last week and champions in those sports will be determined dec. 14. Basketball and wrestling arc on the Germany bin enor schedules for the weekends of dec. 6- and 13 14. In basketball it would be greatly appreciated if the girls games boys if they play first could be called in separately instead of waiting to Call both girls and boys in at the same time. If coaches will get us head shots now of people they expect to be top performers during the year we would really appreciate it. If we have a picture on file it is easy to use it if an athlete enjoys a spectacular night. To Slin in Strim . Glory no match for pressure cooker was Faust cause lost from outset by Hal Bock a sports writer time ran out on Gerry Faust tuesday. Or did that really happen five years ago when he moved into the hottest seat in College football the coaching Job at notre Dame Lou Holtz Dick Vermeil George Welsh and the other candidates mentioned As potential successors might be advised to carefully consider just what awaits any Man who accepts the coaching Job under the Golden dome. Understand first that working in the athletic department at South Bend is sort of like being curator in a museum. All around you Are mementos of the storied past battered game balls from Memora ble victories paeans to the four horse men tributes to the glorious regimes of Rockne Leahy end Parseghian. The place almost echoes with the sounds of a Glori Ous football history. It is a legacy of leg ends. Into this pressure cooker stepped Faust a genuinely Nice Man whose coaching credentials began and ended at Moll or High school in Cincinnati. This is not the very Best preparation for a Job of this Magni tude. The souvenirs and portraits that line the Halls at the athletic and convocation Center in the Middle of the notre Dame Campus seemed to peer Down on him permanently saying to the new Man of it s your turn now. Let s see who you can do it All started so Well for Faust too. His first team in 1981 won its first game beat ing Louisiana state 27-9, a convincing Vic tory that pushed notre Dame into the no. 1 ranking in the nation. Hey this is easy right not exactly. The Irish lost their next game to Michigan and dropped to no. 13. Then they lost to Purdue and tumbled out of the poll. That a difficult for the Irish to do because the voters like the fans re member the glory years and enjoy Canon izing this school whenever possible. In fact notre Dame made at least a Token appearance in the poll in each of Faust s five years. Tokenism however docs not work Here. Notre Dame finished 5-6 that first sea son its first losing year since the disastrous 2-7 one year stewardship of Hugh Devore in 1963. The wolves smelling blood began assembling rallying behind cries of oust Faust cruel treatment for a gentle Man who is also a gentleman. They have been there waiting Ever since. They come with the territory. Just ask Dan Devine who went 57-Lfrl in six years and won a National championship in 1977 but still had them chasing him from time to time. Faust was easier prey a Man whose teams often Rode roller coaster rides of winning and losing that baffled every one around the program. Notre Dame was 6-1-1 in 1982 before losing its last three games. The Irish were 6-2 in 1983 before losing their last three games and then barely escaping with a one Point Victory in the Liberty bowl against Boston College. They lost three straight at Home cutting the heart out of the 1984 season that finished at 7-5, including an Aloha bowl loss to Southern methodist. The recruiting classes were always first rate understandable because of the enthusiasm that Faust exudes. That added to the frustration. If he was t getting the players the losing might be easier to explain. Lust saturday was a typical example of the Faust regime. His team marched crisply Down the Field on its first posses Sion against Louisiana state and scored a touchdown. Then without explanation the offence closed Down like an engine whose ignition had been shut off. The Early touchdown turned out to be their Only Points and the Irish lost 10-7. Three Days later Faust resigned. The wolves had their Man finally. Coaches on Faust class act credit to game by the associated pros colleagues expressed Little Surprise but much sadness tuesday at Gerry Faust s decision to resign As coach of the notre Dame football team. Many described him As a class act and a credit to College football. It s a sad Day in the life of Gerry Faust but you have to expect those things in College football said Arizona stale coach John Cooper. Cooper said it was common knowledge that Faust would either resign or be fired at the end of this season. The Arizona stale coach said he first met Faust when he was in aug giant coach at Kentucky recruiting in Ohio where fault was a High school coach. Gerry Faust is a great individual and you hate to see that happen to anybody Cooper said. Arkansas coach Ken Hartfield said he respected Faust for what he tried to do at notre Dame bul was Sadden cd that he was t Able to accomplish everything he wanted to do. He wan cd to run a clean ship and bring credit to notre Dame University and iry to uphold the highest moral standards of intercollegiate athletics and i think he Don that Hartfield said. With experience and training he s going to make a valuable contribution to another area in the Mississippi coach Billy Brewer said he was unsettled by fault s resignation. It disturbs me any time that 1 hear that anyone of my atari nerf resigned for whatever reason Brewer Laid. Over the last two years i have had the Opportunity to develop a Friendship with Gerry. I am very sad to hear be will no longer be the coach Al Noire Dame. He is a class Penon and loves school. He gave Michigan state coach George Perles described Faust As a class i am very sorry to hear about resignation Perles Laid. It u a shame thai a person would have to resign under pressure. Gerry is a class Miami coach Jimmy Johnson whose learn plays Noire Dame on saturday said Faust s resignation was no Surprise to him. I think thai was probably expected in a lol of areas Johnson Laid. As for saturday s game he said i Don t Sec that As having an effect on our football team. They Vegol to be concerned with themselves and their preparation for the game. We should t to concerned about things we have no control Over. It could be an emotional Ball game for notre Dame but Here again we Don t have any control Over that soil s nol something we should be concerned at Moll or High school in Cincinnati where Faust first came to prominence As coach. Coach Steve Klonne said the reaction Al our school would be nothing but sadness. He actually took Moll or High school and put it on the map Klonne said. A lol of what he did at Moll or for 22 years we still do. For us it s a real sad moment. He never changed. He went to inc Job and he still called us a lot about o ice a week to see How we re doing. He never talked about adversity Klonne added. He was a Fine human being. He always helped people who needed it. Win Ning football games is the Bollom line in Job. It s Loo Klonne came to Moll or in 1978 and coached under Faust for three years. After Faust s departure in 1980, Ted Baciu Peuo served a year As Mueller head coach before leaving to go into private business and Klonne look Over in 1982 As head coach. During Faust s 22 years at Moeller in suburban Cincinnati the crusaders were 174-17-2. His teams won six Ohio High school championships and earned National attention. Asked if he thinks Faust would consider returning to Moeller in some capacity Klonne said. I Don t think so. He was Here 22 years and he had done everything he could
