Gregory died of a heart attack last month in Rome Ai the Ige of 53. Born in Kansas City of extremely wealthy parents. Gregory used his Money to go racing and he was Cine of the first americans to move Inlo International com petition circles. His compatriots of that Era included such figures As Harry Shell. Dan Curney. Phil Hill and Carroll Shelby. Although Gregory never won a grand prix his be. Showing was a third Pace Ai Monaco he did win the 24 hours of la mans in l%5. In that , he shared a North american racing team Nart Ferrari 2501.m with the late Jochen Rindt of Austria who became posthumous world Champion in 1970. Kindt was killed in an Accident during qualifying for the italian grand prix that year. The extremely affable Gregory. Who had several sports car wins including the 1.000 Kilometres of the nuer Burgering in 1961 aboard a Maserati also raced in the 1965 Indianapolis 500, where he gave a Good account of himself. He qualified Only 30th in the 33 car Field but zoomed up to fifth place by Lap 30 when he was forced to retire with mechanical problems. Gregory was a genuine character of the old school and he was also a Brilliant escape artist surviving Many serious accidents. On one occasion his car developed Brake failure at More than 100 Mph and he jumped out of it just before in hit an embankment. He was unscathed. The same thing occurred year later but his Luck held.
