The pipes arc filled with a Saline solution that picks up heat on the roof and circulates Down to the basement. Although Berlin does not get a lot of direct sunlight annually Luders said the system will operate eight months a year. A conventional heating system takes Over during the Winter months he said. The solar powered setup is expected to save 8,800 Gallons of i Csc fuel annually and Cut More than $17,000 from the air port fuel Bill Luders said. The system is shut Down when the Cost of driving the Transfer unit and pumps exceeds the amount of heat Energy Gath ered on the roof he said. The system cannot operate when the outside temperature dips below 27 degrees fahrenheit because of the danger that the Saline solution might freeze Luders said. A s2.5 million building renovation project sparked the plan to install the passive solar Energy system Luders said. Com plete gutting of the building made it easy to install the pipe system that gathers the heal. A total of 35 Semi private Baths that draw hot water from the solar heat system were included in the plans. Officials will decide next year whether the system is successful enough to warrant installing it in other Airport buildings.
