It is Only after the first blinding Flash of color As it were that one can begin to assimilate the subjects of the paintings and then one is drawn Back and Back again finding subtleties always discovering something new. Perhaps Vivian Ellis is so conscious of colors because she grew up in new Orleans that most colourful City. At any rate when she finally got around to Art school Monchen studio run by Waki Zollner in 1963, her instructor gave her full rein with her colors. I mixed colors and mixed colors and mixed colors she said. Then i started my drawings and made everything into she was working at the Munich american army Hospital As a nurse a Job that allowed her to reach her goal in coming to Europe to travel and learn she gave up the Job last year to devote full time to her Art. Since then she has discovered that she needs still More time to paint. I can t paint eight hours a Day every Day As i thought i could she said. It takes too much so she relaxes by playing the piano going to the opera and theater and visiting friends. I go to the circus often she said. I like to paint from about 12 years ago she began painting where i came from the Summers in the country with her grandmother when she was a child. She often draws from music and from poetry she has just done a series inspired by Langston Hughes and poets of his genre. Before i came to Europe about the Only time i painted was when i worked at vacation Bible school she said. I liked to express the Bible stories in color and the children liked it her father Aaron Ellis is pastor of the greater Rose Hill Baptist Church in new Orleans. As a result of her upbringing in the Church her subjects often Bible stories which she knows by heart. She likes to paint the fantastic beasts from the Book of revelations. Many of her paintings Are scenes from Church i am fascinated by the difference in the ornate stained Glass of Europe and the Plain stained Glass at Home and prayer meetings singing sermons. But her work is not limited. Canvases portray spontaneous Street parades in new Orleans studies of the City s architecture there is a whole ski vacation on one Canvas and bavarian churches and the Walls of Dubrovnik. I be even painted the Kitchen sink she said. Her notebook she keeps notes in German and her Small drawing canvases and colors go with her everywhere. Her drawings Are notes in picture form Quick canvases that will be polished up later As permanent oils.
