As the scenes alternate the peace of the Camp is repeatedly shattered by the menacing sight and sound of the outlaws growing closer and closer. And the audience grows Ever More tense wanting to shout 3 warning to the miners. The sequence is beautifully done. But there s a nagging feeling that the scene is All too familiar. Of course it s been appropriated from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance. Kid. The film goes downhill from there. Eastwood is obviously trying to make a classic Western but he s gone about it All wrong. Classics Aren t built out of pieces of old classics but Pale rider is. Besides the misguided tribute to Butch Cassidy Pale rider pieces together memorable moments from High noon the gunfight scene Shane come backhand other favourites. It s 3 deft bit of construction but Pale rider is no More a classic film than Frankenstein s monster was a Man. A sense of humor could have saved the film. But Eastwood wanting to be a serious film maker has filled Pale rider with laconic moralist. His mysterious drifter preacher inspires the miners to courage Renews a woman s interest in life and platonic ally teaches her daughter the meaning of love. He boldly faces the bad Guys and when we be been fooled into thinking hell be Able to overcome evil through strength of character he blows them away dirty Harry style. The result of All this solemnity is not the hushed Awe that he d like his audience to experience it s a tendency to Giggle when the action becomes unbearably improbable. If it weren t for Michael Moriarty the whole project might fall Flat. But his gentle Miner is the Only truly human in the film. Too bad the same can t be said for Carrie Snodgress who looks nearly As embarrassed As Eastwood did when he was singing to Trees in paint your Wagon. And Eastwood relies on his portentous Monotone to carry him through. Still in Spile of any criticism Eastwood fans will like the movie. They re a curious lot almost religious in their Fervour even when acknowledging his failures. For him they la say this is a departure an attempt to stretch his movie making horizons. It s an attempt to put a Little substance behind his Stone face. Maybe next time hell put a Little humor and humanity behind it too.
